  1. won't the 240 rods be too long?
  2. awesome... i think that's the best thing i could've heard! thanks guys!
  3. sweet! i might have to head down there!
  4. basically i have an N47 head and i want to port it to have square exhaust ports.... has anyone ever done this and exactly how much trouble is it going to be? i want to port-match this head to an E88 header and i don't want to have to do the valve work on my E88 to get the bigguns in there... any info please!!
  5. also, i'd like to add that you are going to want to get your hands on the misc. parts you will need for the R200 conversion (i'm assuming that since you have 4sp you have an R180...?) but i'm sure you already know that, as far as the compression ratio part, dan got it on the $$
  6. you're going to be seeing the same acceleration (if not better) with the R200/5speed combination because the z has a 3.36 diff in it. (while the R200 is going to have a 3.9?) the big differences occur in the gearing in the tranny. the easiest way to get the conversion is by multiplying the individual gears in the tranny by the differential gear. the higher the number the more acceleration you're going to get (by sacrificing the top speed in that gear). EDIT: or do THAT! you beat me to the punch!
  7. i'm probably going to stick with the N47 so i won't have to oversize the valves in the E88. i also want to keep the E88 in good (stock) condition in case i want to restore the car....
  8. thanks for the info! yeah, i am probably going to port & polish the N47 for now and get the domed pistons. i don't really want to mill the head b/c i don't want to worry about the tension in the timing chain. -jason
  9. wow! nice find! i'm a little sad that you want to "butcher" it , but it's your car now, you do what you want! awesome, though! -jason
  10. thanks for the info.. i was just wondering from the viewpoint of someone who has done one (or both?) of the combinations who could give me some insight. i know that each has its pros and cons, such as the ccs i nthe combustion chambers, the size/shape of the exhaust ports, etc... but thanks for the tip! -jason
  11. i want med/high compression, and i'm gonna be running flattop/slight dome pistons... i have both heads, and if i use the e88 i am going to use the valves from the N47... so which is better for a street application? -jason
  12. that sounds quite tasty! what do you think i can expect with the same mods w/ SUs? -jason
  13. victoria british has a tool that you can use as well... go to their website and they'll send you their catalog
  14. after doing some reading in other threads i decided on sticking with the N47 head and L28 crank (as per your recommendation)... alas, another idea swirling quietly down the drain,,,, -jason
  15. thanks for the info... i have the 79 260zx(a) 5-speed..... i was just wondering b/c i know that destroking a chevy engine allows for longer rods, e.g. a better geometry within the engine... anyway, thanks for the info! -jason edit: i had to cut it short, but i also wanted to add that i plan on raising the compression, and i was thinking that higher revs at a higher compression was ideal.... anyway, i am willing to sacrifice some torque to get max horsepower (via revs) and i was hoping that the trade-off was worthehile..
  16. holy sh!t! that's crazy.... that poor car. anyway, it shows you the durablity of japanese engines!
  17. okay, i'm trying to find a really god combination for a street/autox car. i want decent power, but i don't need buttloads of torque. i have a 1972 240z (all stock) with the E88 head. i have a complete N47 L28 (1979) and i already have some ideas. i wanna know what you think! okay, i'm taking the 5 speed and i'm keeping the R180 (LSD comes later) and putting 4.11 gears in it (good idea?). i plan on getting flattop or slightly domed pistons and using the crank and rods from the L24 (i know you think this is going in the wrong direction, but i want revs!). will the L24 rods be good enough? I also want to know which head i should use (E88 or N47). i know the E88 has better compression, but is limited by the ports/valves. is there a better head that i can get for not a lot of $$? any feedback is greatly appreciated! -jason btw - i plan on running stock SUs for the time being, until i go for a good camshaft (shoud i use L24 or L28 until i get a custom one?) and a good intake system.
  18. if you haven't gone there yet, go to this post: http://hybridz.org/nuke/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=35422 i'm sure you will find it very insightful -jason
  19. hmm... so basically i'm looking at approximately $_____ to get me going? my biggest problem is that i'm baroque so i'm just trying to use parts i have (namely from my wrecked 280zx). if i swap the r200 from that in will it be difficult (and yes i know i'd be doing double work) to swap another r180 in later? i don't think it would be, but i know it's gonna be a chore. anyway, thanks for your help! -jason
  20. thank you for the info and the link... would the r180 be sufficient if i swap in the 5 speed? i don't plan on making buttloads of torque, but i am swapping in an entire L28 assembly (however i am destroking it w/ my 240 crank and rods) so basically, with a destroked L28 with minor intake modifications (for now), will the r180 be too tall for me to get ample acceleration? -jason
  21. someone probably already had a post about this, but i searched and i couldn't find one.... anyway, as the title says, why should i replace my R180? i have both and don't plan on putting out more than 250hp. what are the benefits?
