Uuuuhhhh, this is a thread about normally aspirated L6 engines. -
NA 3.1L=>head & camshaft questions. No shortcuts, max
johnc replied to zredbaron's topic in Nissan L6 Forum
Well, since all L28s were fuel injected from the factory you're not compromising the "purity" of the engine by going with FI. Throttle response has much more to do with reciprocating mass then the fuel system - carbs do not have any advantage over FI. If you build a 300hp NA L6 I think the FUN will be there regardless of the fuel system. Sound is a subjective thing and I agree that a triplet of Webers at full song is beautiful. But, one thing you need to keep in mind. At the horsepower levels you're discussing, going lean for a even a short time will cost you pistons. Make sure you can tune those carbs correctly and check them often if the weather changes drastically. The search is probably out again. The post was from February 2002. -

People assume a lot when discussing the N42 vs. the P90. But they forget that any head can have quench if you custom make the pistons... -

Absolutely give him a call. 770-932-0160. Talk with Jim or Chet. My car has a highly modified N42 head. Find the "Defcon 1" thread in the 6 cylinder engine board on this site. -
Its probably the Type A transmission. If the bellhouseing is a separate piece then that's what it is. To a restorer they are worth a little bit more but those trans are weaker and have an odd shifter motion.

You're better off going with an N42 or a P90 head and using custom pistons to get the comrpession you need (at least 12 to 1). I don't know anyone using an E31 head and getting more then about 275hp. Jim Thompson at Sunbelt has a lot of different cam grinds for the L6. My cam has a .534 lift but I don't know (and Jim won't tell me) the duration or the lobe centers. I would argue that the 3.0L Jim built me is the "best", but I'm hardly an unbiased source. Dan Baldwin, Mike Eckhuas, and a few others have some pretty powerful NA L6 engines. You'll need to be pushing over 300hp at the crank and over 260 at the wheels to compete... -
The Fram HP1 is still one of the best racing filters out there. Its used ALL the time on thousands of race cars across the country. FYI... Since I run a spin on filer (the HP1 won't fit) I run the NAPA Gold 1515R filter on my 240.

Coil over Question yet again
johnc replied to ToplessZ's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
You don't just cut a set amount out of the strut tubes. You have to shorten the strut tubes to fit the inserts you purchased. Don't do any cutting until you have the inserts in hand. If you're using the Tokico Illuminas you need Tokico part # BZ3099 ('87-89 Toyota MR2) for the shortened front struts and either BZ3015 (240 and early 260Z front) or BZ3012 (late 260 and 280 front) for the shortened rear struts. And yes, there's a difference in the wall thickness, ID, and OD between the 240/early 260 and the late 260/280 strut tubes. If you lower the car more then about 2" you should probably shorten the struts. A lot of these questions have been answered many times before. Use the search function (if its working) or look at Jeromio's FAQ. -
The R200 is basically the same in all model cars it was installed in. There are minor differences in halfshaft or CV joint attachment, but an R200 is an R200. Keep the R200 in your 280Z. You can add an LSD and swap the ring and pinions if you want different gearing. Do lots of searchs (if the search function is working). Not true. Quaife and Nissan Comp also offer LSDs for the R200.

Habeas Corpus was suspended during the war of 1812 and during the civil war. Restrictions on freedom of the press and assembly were enacted during WW1 and WW2. Eminent Domain laws were greatly exapanded during WW2 (the Manhattan Project) and Roosevelt became a de-facto economic dictator. In his book "All the Law But One" Chief Justice Willaim Rehnquist stated, "Its is neither desirable nor is it remotely likely that civil liberty will occupy as favored a position in wartime as it does in peacetime. The laws will not be silent in time of war, but they will speak with a somewhat different voice." Since the Korean War Congress has 3 times given the President the purse strings to wage war without any formal declaration needed. It is not unconstititional for the President to wage war without a formal declaration as numerous legal challenges have failed to be granted review by the Supreme Court. Under a war declaration, its understood that the country faces a national emergency and impelentation of new laws that restrict some fundamentaly right are known to be temporary in nature. There is some fear now that, without a formal war declaration, that these temporary restrictions will not be lifted after the emergency is over. Personally I think that fear is unjustified and our built in checks-and-balances will self correct.

They don't go slow when drifting. I've ridden with Taka Ano and he's in 4th gear in his GTS when pitching it sideways. He also keeps the rim width close to the tire width and uses air pressure to adjust grip and tire stiffness. I've autocrossed with and against Taka since 1996. He still kicks my butt every time.
-
Not true. You want the amount of sidewall flex the tire engineers designed into the tire. No more and no less. Over the years and at many different times I've talked with Jeff Speer at Hoosier Tire, Rudy at Kumho Tire, and Kevin Takashima at Goodyear Racing and all have said that rim width should be equal or at most 1" wider then the tread width of the tire for the best performance. This is true for their DOT-R and road racing slicks.

In times of war (and we're forgetting that we are at war with groups of people that are intent on killing as many of us as they can) its common in this country for civil liberties to be curtailed TEMPORARILY. This was true during the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, the Spanish American War, and World Wars 1 and 2. The framers of the constitution knew that and provided mechanisms for governemnt to accoplish these temporary acts. Only during the Korean "Police Action" and the Vietnam War were civil liberties left basically untouched. Both of those wars were political in nature and not a direct threat. Al Queda HAS infiltrated the US and has successfully carried out two separate attacks that have killed about 3,000 people. They are still trying to kill more of us. In all this discusison of the Patriot Act and our loss of civil liberties this simple fact gets forgotten. This is not some abstract legal argument. WE ARE AT WAR WITH PEOPLE THAT CAN, DO, AND WILL KILL US! Remember, the ACLU can't and won't protect you from a guy with a bomb strapped to his chest.

Its basically the SoCal lowrider look. Very bad for handling. Very bad for rim edges that now scrape on curbs.

Actually, he's right. The right to privacy does not explicitly exist in the Constitution. It has been inferred by the courts through interpretations of the 1st, 4th, and 5th amendments in the Bill of Rights. Some of the most cited case examples: 1890 - Warren & Brandeis. Privacy and the press 1967 - Supreme court. Wiretapping 1974 - Supreme court. Bank records In addition, there's been some legislation codifying the concept: The Privacy Act of 1974 Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986 (ECPA)

I you look at some more basic information like violent crimes per 1,000 of population you'll see that the US has a greater rate then Canada. I think the deaths by guns are a part of that statistic, but the overall violent crime rate is a much more important number. Personally, I think the US has a higher violent crime rate because its part of the price we pay for a more culturally diverse society. The US has the highest legal immigration rate in the world and when you mix races, ethnicities, etc. you have problems. These problems are inter and intra race and have a lot to do with class. And no, I'm not anti-immigration. If you want to work and are not a felon, I think you should be able to come into this country legally. But, what most folks miss and the media fails to report, is that the overall violent crime rate has been tending down for decades. We are a significantly safery society then back in the 1960s when I was a kid. You wouldn't know that by watching TV but I was in much greater danger of being kidnapped, assaulted, hurt, or murdered as a child in the 1960s then any child growing up today. I think this trend has nothing to do with gun control or gun ownership. It has a lot to do with television and the homogenizing effect that it has on people's morals. Over the decades certain societal norms are propogated through a common medium (TV) and parents re-inforce those norms as they raise their children. In the US , those norms are basically Judeo-Christian ideas of right, wrong, and punishment in an afterlife. The discussion of guns and gun control is a distraction from looking at ourselves and our behavior. Its an easy thing for politicians and pressure groups (on both sides) to use for their own advantage. Like flag burning, its a litmus test that has no affect out in the real world.

Matt, Such an engine swap is not legal under SP (Street Prepared). It is legal under SM (Street Modified) 2. I'm working on Amir's swap right now and its a pretty interesting idea for competition. There are still some unknowns regarding suspension setup but when his car get's over to Erik Messley's shop a lot of that should be figured out. One of the handling concerns is that the car might not turn in very well. In general, Zs are sluggish on turn in and lots of suspension work will get them to an acceptable level. Moving bunches more weight off the front might exacerbate that problem and move to turn-in back to "sluggish."

SPD in Sacramento (916) 635-8108 has 304, 321, and 347 stainless straight tube and bends in .035, .049, and .063 wall thickness. Tubing ODs from 1.250" to 5" and their mandrel bends can be had down to the tube OD (ie: 3" tube mandrel bent on a 3" radius). They aren't the cheapest but their quality is great and they provide great service. You'll need 308L, 309L, or 347 wire to weld 304 and 347 wire to weld 321 and 347. A C25 mix (75Ar 25C) works OK for stainless but there are better mixtures if you're doing a lot of stainless MIG work.
-
The weight and price difference between thin wall stainless and thicker wall aluminum is minimal. I'm sure its been done but you don't gain any benefit and you add in one mechanical connection that adds to the price of the complete exhaust.

I would contact the repair shop and explain what you found. Ask them to replace the broken part and check the head to see if any debris is left. Otherwise, if you drove the car from the repair shop to storage, the debris has probably settled to a place (the pan) where its not hurting anything.

Design Products racing coilovers
johnc replied to Roostmonkey's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
I buy the Koni's throught Erik Messley at EMI Racing (714) 713-9096. Ross Corrigan also sells them for $170 each plus shipping. You can also get them through TruChoice, ProParts, Tripoint Engineering, and most other suspension shops. There isn't a big margin on shocks so don't expect any great deals.
