  1. OK, very unexpectedly, I now have a very nice WC T5 for my Z from a 90's Camaro with low mileage, I was wondering if anyone has some ideas on what aftermarket shifters would be the best? Heard anything good, bad, ugly about any brands in particular? Anything to stay away from? I have thought about the Pro 5.0 shifters that a few Mustangs use (make 'em for Camaros now), but I have not read up on these things, so I'm putting this thread out there if any of you have an opinion. It may be a little while before I purchase one of these thingies, but I want to educate myself at the feet of your ultimate wisdom...ooops, wrong forum...so let's hear it! I am also going to use the counter-gear stabilizer that Mike C posted about from gearzone.com--looks like a winner and preventative maintenance fer sure; thanks Mike C Thanks guys, Davy [ August 19, 2001: Message edited by: DavyZ ]
  2. It would look nice, but that's a bit steep for me. If you get a few guys here to go in with you, post on the other Zcar forums as well and you'll have your magic 8. Davy
  3. Vinh, did you use a torch or what to burn that baby? Davy
  4. $2800 Canadian seems like an awfully good price for a V8Z--it even looks to be in the JTR position, which is always a plus. As long as the frame is not bent, the car would suit me well for a weekend warrior--color is right too I hope the other one is worth the money that they are asking for it--if it's really nice with many upgrades, you'll have quite a decision to make--suffer, baby! Davy
  5. Greg, I bought a Moroso roller bearing for my crank (also had an auto tranny originally) and I was advised by the speed shop that the fit would be very tight, use an oil to help facilitate the incertion of the bearing, and never ever use a hammer directly on the unit. They suggested use of a special tool, but an old socket will do very nicely. Other than that, it should fit--this is a genuine GM crank and so it the roller bearing? Otherwise you could always try another brand, like Moroso, to compare tolerances. Word of advice: once you get pounding on the assembly, make sure it's what you want, because once it gets going in there, getting it out is nearly impossible. Good luck. Davy
  6. I'm sorry you missed out Ha! Gotcha! Ross Corrigan is working on it at his Modern-Motorsports http://www.modern-motorsports.com/ There should be info on his site. HTH Davy [ August 19, 2001: Message edited by: DavyZ ]
  7. James, I concur with what Tim said. Based on the motor's condition, miles, and other high performance parts (if any) any cam manufacturer can tell you what they recommend for your given application (V8 transplant in a ZX). Then, thank them and go down to Jeg's and purchase a cam that is closest to those specs. I think you'll be happiest with that. Just guessing HP is like picking out a needle in a haystack because of all the variables involved that we don't know about--talk to the friendly folks at a cam manuf. help line--you'll be miles ahead if you do. Davy
  8. Yeah, even lubricated, the piston rings add friction to the rotating assembly. If you are using hypereutectic pistons, you may notice that they have tighter clearances than forged units and will be harder to turn in theory. Happy rebuild! Davy
  9. They look a lot like Shelby mirrors for Shelby Mustangs and Cobras. Check out some of their sites and see what you come up with. VB used to have some realy nice chrome and black mirrors made by Momo or some company like that, but all they have now are those nasty little plastic ones. Davy
  10. Great to hear the paint job turned out so well w/o any mistakes! Pete, we're pulling for you too! Davy
  11. Lone, my mind was drawing a blank for the word variety, so I thought about using myriad, but decided against it. I felt the word selection was a bit dull--sorry, I'm just trying to get some word satisfaction in here. To think, I used to talk like that back in college--the years and beers have done their worst... Davy
  12. Hope it goes well. BTW, halogen lights around vaporized paint (flammable) is not a great idea--there is adequate ventillation, yes? Water heater location? Not in the garage I hope. Davy

    muncie q?

Do you consider the shifter coming out from the non-stock location too far forward? The Muncie is so short it's going to happen that way, even in the JTR position. Use a non-HEI distributor if you go this route since it will buy you an inch. I hope this makes sense. Davy
  14. Clean looking Z with that nice exhaust--tucks up nicely under there too. Davy
  15. The Holy Handgrenade of Antioch? And thou shalt count to three...and lobest thine handgranade toward thine enemies to blow them to ity bity bits... --Monty Python Sorry, a little off topic there, but yeah! The difference in the motors is almost extreme. It's simply amazing what DOHC heads make in the upper mass of the motor. Not so good for clearance. I like the price, compactness, and availability of the 302...not to mention the plethora of aftermarket parts for it too! Long live the 302! Davy

    muncie q?

Well, it totally depends on where the motor is mounted in the engine compartment. Leonard (Fairlady327) has one of the best 4 speed setups I have seen. Most have the shifter coming out way too far forward--from the fuse box, but Leonard has his engine up tight against the firewall with a non-HEI disty and the shifter is just forward of the original location. Not as good as a T5 or T56 in the JTR position, but good nonetheless. Davy
  17. The easiest one I ever did was on a 200SX. I asked my father what to do, and he said to lie directly underneath it after unbolting it, and just slide it back and bench press the sucker to the ground. So I did, with much fear and trepidation--but it was light and easy to do. Blew me away that he was right. I'll not try that with too many American trannys though Davy
  18. Sorry, Pete, but he asked for it I'm feeling kinda juvenile right now... Davy

    Roof Vent

That would be one heck of a fresh air intake, or one noisy duct! Looks good on a radically designed car like the Viper--you would need flares and whatnot to make it look at home on the Z, otherwise the scoopie will look somewhat out of place. Remember that balance is key here, and it separates a good overall design from a bad one. Just food for thought. Davy
  20. While we're on the subject of the color of boogers, Richard, wouldn't copper make them (keep them) green? Or would they actually end up blue??? Perhaps you could make a spread sheet showing the various metals and the resulting colors of boogers! We'll add it to the FAQ sheet! Perhaps you can even submit it for college credits lol Davy
  21. I had no idea there were problems with the Split-fire plugs breaking apart. Well, I'm not running any kind of boost and I would think that then it would be ok, but I may give the Iridiums a go in the future--for now the V8 will stick with the relatively new AC plugs... Davy
  22. Are the FI gurus afraid to talk with a girl? C'mon guys! Davy
  23. 375? Probably low, but better to err on the conservative side and be pleasantly surprised. Davy
