I belive there was a thread on this here, just do some research and find the right starter. Tapping the engine block requires removing the engine, and having the mounts and alligment hardware lined up perfectly. Its not reccomended. Ill find the thread if I can.

I just went through this rigomorale. Finally realized I had a 153 tooth flywheel. Whats really rich is the tech guy at summit said my flexplate was on backwards. Said I had to remove the tranny and flip it around. The car started just fine when I removed the old bulky starter (lesson here: dont throw out parts!). So my 153 tooth starter is on the way, I hope you figure out what type to get. Theres a page I link to that may help. Maybe you might want to try a universal starter? http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?p=757834#post757834

Smae story with mine, I kinda like it even though it weakens the car. Ill make up for it with the strut tower bars I have on the way... Maybe later, a t top s30z? Id love to see that.

Thanks for the link, but I have a sbc v8 in mine, so I have to use chevy starters. Interesting read though!

Found out on my own. Starter gear should not be in contact with the flexplate the whole time. I bought 2 168 tooth flywheel starters accidentally. I got a 153 tooth starter on the way, this should be the final step on getting this beast on the road. This page helped me identify which starters I had bought, and which one I needed to buy. http://www.ecae.com/starter.html

I bolted on my new starter today, and the only thing that bugs me is the starter gear is right up against the flywheel. So if its running, wont the starter gear be rotating with the flywheel? This is the second starter Ive bought, its like a 305 is a rare engine to find a starter that fits, if this one is wrong. Is this a problem? My old starter had it placed further back, and the starting gear was pushed forward then retracted back into the starter. I didnt have any gas in the tank, but the engine turned over, so the re-wiring was semi sucessful. Any help will be appreciated.

I printed it up for my reference, but this is making more questions than answers. Such as... The starter doesnt have to be grounded with an HEI system. Starter needs an ammeter, dont need that so its confusing. Im just having problems finding a HEI chevy starter wiring diagram that includes a 3 wire alternator, battery, starter, and the ignition switch. I wired up the tach and the coil yesterday, and did most of the lights. Just dont want to fry my new starter. Also still confused if there are wires coming off of the starter and going back into the car. Thanks.

I filled in my rear vents aswell, and I planeed on filling the seams by the headlights. Looks GREAT! Thanks for being brave enough to do this so I can feel confident about attempting it. Did you weld it? Or did you bondo it? Car looks great.

I picked up a 10 dollar gm ignition switch for now, Ill deal with the datsun switch later. Its 3 terminal alternator. I am going to connect today what I know for a fact is correct, including the exiter and the coil (which I found this morning). What Im sure about is this sofar.... positive battery to starter (12v) purple ignition switch from sarter into harness coil wire to coil exiter to exiter on alt Spent 3 hours outside working, and I put the oil pan back on, wire up the starter, only to realize its the wrong kind (the bolt holes are n an offset pattern). I am qutting for this weekend, but I will call the wiring tech supprot and keep this thread updated. Summit ships within a week dont they?

Vince posted this, I will take note of it. By the way, I am searching my ass off. If anyone is wondering, heres how i wired my ignition switch. I had asked "TurboMeister" how he wired his a while back and this is the PM he sent me. So far it seems everything is working fine. "I have the #5002 Pro street 12 circuit harness. My ignition switch has 5 wires coming out of it. I will describe the wires with the primary color first and the trace color secondly. #1.) 12 gage-White/red-attaches to 12 gage Red of Painless B+ in power from fuse block. #2.) 12 gage Black/blue-attaches to 12 gage Painless purple from starter. #3.) Black/white attaches to 18 gage Painless red ignition control for B+ power for my MSD ignition box. #4.) Blue/red attaches to 18 gage Painless orange and 18 gage Painless brown ( I joined these two together and both are now supplying ignition controlled accessory power ). These power accessories only while ignition is turned on. #5.) Black/yellow is not being used by me. Looking at the 5 wire connector block this is how the Datsun wires are arranged: Black/blue-------- empty Black/white------- Blue/red Black/yellow------- White/red"

This is a complete re-wiring of my sbc 305 with a keep it clean wiring kit. I am documenting all of this information to help others. Ok, took off the old giant 25lb starter, and I opened the new one. This wiring kit has the wires labelled every 6 inches, so I have labelled the wires in the drawing. What Im not understanding is how the starter hooks up the the battery, and I have a roguh idea of how the alternator might work, but I have NO IDEA what the "coil" wire goes too, and the ignition switch and all of the 6 wires that hook up to the ignition switch have me baffled. Any useful help will allow me to document this with drawings (better than this one) that will be used in helping other members on this site. I will call the "keep it clean" wiring tech support on monday if I cant figure it out.

I got an angle grinder and the cheapo 10$ ebay vents, they actually dont look to shabby. I needed a solution for the Houston weather during the summer to cool the temps a little. It will be a temporary solution until I can get my hands on a welder, and attempt something equal to Owens car. Man, what a NICE front air dam. It makes me want to go out and work on my car right now. It gives me a lot of inspiration to see something as nice and unique as your car,Owen. How many years did it take for you to assemble/build it? -
Yes, I am very interested in an overdrive transmission. What goes on with installing one? How much would it cost on average? Yeah the car will be a once a week-twice a week driver, just when I dont feel like taking the econo-box sentra.

Ive got one that came in my v8 z swap i purchased (305 sbc), and it seems to be very common. I have a 4 barrel 650 holley carb, and this is not a good combo for gas mileage. on the freeway i get like 3200-3500rpms. So what im asking is this: is it popular becuase its a quick transmission? what can i do besides adding larger wheels to improve gas mileage? what manual transmission would be a better replacement within budget?

When my engine wasnt correctly timed, I was smoking civics/accords etc all the time. For about a week before I re-wired it, I was pushing about the correct horespower, and it was LOUD. Louder than any fart car for sure. So some civic would get alongside me, and when I stomped on the gas, my car would just mute his out, and take off. Im so pumped to get that starter on an go cook some rice.

Spent about 2 hours tearing out the old tar. The GF came out to help me, but she gave up after 5 mins. Go fig. I bought some undercoating to spray under the car, do any of you have experience with 3M rubberized undercoating?
