wtf2kid Posted August 9, 2011 Share Posted August 9, 2011 (edited) Hey everyone, I have a 1972 240z and I'm thinking about swapping out the L24 with a 1979 L28e engine. I've read that the engine mounts are identical and that the 5-speed trans will also mount right up but I haven't seen anybody mention anything about the fuel lines. It concerns me because the L24 has the dual carbs and the L28e is fuel injected. Also will the engine harness connect to the older body harness? Or will I need a new body harness? Matt K Posted August 9, 2011 Share Posted August 9, 2011 Re-use your L24 supporting equipment & wiring. Just swap the longblock & transmission, add your L24 intake/exhaust to the L28. If the L28 has the E12-80 distributor, wire that in (ensure you also swap the aluminum piece it bolts to, as they are different heights between the two engines) to keep electronic ignition (better). I swapped a '78 L28E into my old '73, and that's how I did it, except I also added an MSA header & twice pipes exhaust system. The 280ZX alternator is also a keeper, more output than the L24 one, but you need to wire it properly in order to use it (really easy). dexter72 Posted August 9, 2011 Share Posted August 9, 2011 (edited) If your going to use the 79 efi system, You have to remove the EFI harness and swap it to your 240z also. If your doing that it would be a good idea to buy two haynes manuals, one for each Z. Then you can see where your going to Splice into the wiring. The high volume/pressure EFI pumps will apparently develop enough back pressure on the return line to increase your fuel pressure, making it uncontrollable by the FPR, so that's a valid concern.
