dustin_haru
hey guys i'm kinda new to this forum and was wondering what would be the best way to mod a l26? at the moment i have a msa coil, and a crane cam fireball block on my 1974 260z. i just got my twin carbs tuned and overhauled, new spark plugs, and lines. i was wondering what should/can i do to make this motor better? while talking to some old timers around town. they told me to dump the engine and start over with a l24, because it would be a better block. i was wondering if this was true, or are there other ways which i can upgrade my hp/build my motor? i was also wondering if i could bypassing emissions regulator by blocking the vacuum hoses. with much aloha, dustin_haru
rossman
i was wondering what should/can i do to make this motor better? Define "better." Define your goals in more tangible terms. Does "better" mean more powerful? more reliable? higher milage? or what? Read this entire thread for an idea of what you can achieve with an n/a l6. while talking to some old timers around town. they told me to dump the engine and start over with a l24, because it would be a better block. i was wondering if this was true, or are there other ways which i can upgrade my hp/build my motor? Uh, no. They don't know what they are talking about. What makes a l24 block "better" than an l26? If you want more power the I would suggest that you go BIGGER and swap in an l28. i was also wondering if i could bypassing emissions regulator by blocking the vacuum hoses. Yes you can; but why? Just so you can pollute more? Bypassing emissions doesn't necessarily equate to more power...which I assume that is what you want...because you have not stated anything other than "better..." dustin_haru
Thank you so much! That post helped a lot My goal for this engine is to produce cost/effective modifications(most bang for the buck), for my tight budget. I am still a college student, so my funds are not that really big yet. I figured I would try to improve my engine just a little for now so I can enjoy driving my Z on my off time. My all time goal is to its throttle response and 0-60 time. (I hope this helps) As for the Emissions my car, the engine bay was stripped apart prier to my purchase. I believe some of the key emissions control units, and hoses are missing. If I am not mistaken the pump/and hoses are missing. Once again much Mahalo! IMHO, you have two, relatively inexpensive options. 1) Tune what you have using a WB02 like an Innovate LM2. 2) Drop in an l28 and use the carbs that you have and tune that setup. If you have flat-top SUs, a lot of people say to ditch them for round-tops. I think there is a trick to avoid the flat-top issues. I don't know what it is but I'm sure a search on this or classic zcar would help. I wouldn't worry about the emissions stuff if it runs OK and you don't have to pass some sort of state mandated emissions test.
Gollum
Bang for the buck usually coincides with DIY. So head over to the FAQ / sticky section on this site and READ READ READ. Knowledge is power, but true knowledge is understanding, which requires experience. Life is the greatest teacher, but the tuition is really high. The lesson in what I just said, is to learn from other's mistakes and take to heart what the experts on this site have to say. Then take what you've gleemed from their information sharing, and go put it to use. As you put it to use and see your own results you're then be on the path to really knowing something and that's invaluable, mostly because people don't want to put in the effort to get there. All that said, I'd say don't get too wrapped up in POWER POWER POWER. A S30 in a well maintained state is a blast to drive, even with 150 crank hp. Many S30's are boring and lifeless not because they don't have power, but because they're not running near original condition anymore. Make sure your bushings are good. Make sure the brakes are all good and happy. Make sure that your struts are doing their job. Make sure you don't have sagging springs. Make sure the carbs are working right. The list goes on and on. But I've driven mild 240Z cars with no more than 130hp to the wheels and it's amazing how fun they can be when everything is working right. By the time you're done with all that you'll probably be out of college and you can decide if you want to stick with the L6 and weather or not you even need much more power. dustin_haru
HybridZ Supporter i really like the sound of option one. I will try that for now, but for the emissions stuff it seems like my car has less power with the missing emission control pieces. i drove a buddies one and it had way more power. Do you know any pages where i may be able to find a way to block/fix my problem? It seems like there are a few hoses i need to find and block. Tree Killer, that sounds super good too! I will try that too, and let you all know how it goes. for the college thing, its not going to be that much longer. 4 more months till graduation, and all the learning more to go, but thank you for your opinions. It really means a lot. Much Aloha, Dustin
