C-Dawg
Hi everyone! I haven't posted here in a very long time! I've recently had some trouble with both my Z as well as my bank account, and I'm wondering how much money I should ask for when I put it up for sale. Here are the details: It's a 1983 280zx, non-turbo, 5 speed manual with 189xxx miles. It has been strictly California owned and garaged 365 days a year. My uncle bought it off the showroom floor and sold it to me when he moved. The body and everything including paint is all original except for HID headlamps. There is no rust or anything like that. I have MSA 3-into-2 headers with exhaust system, no catalytic converter. Here are the problems: Recently got the rod knock and I got it inspected. Rocker arm came loose, and my mechanic disabled the cylinder that it was in. Needs a Cylinder Head Rebuild. Would be perfect for a swap... The car drives perfectly fine and I have driven it at distance (50+ miles each way) even after turning off the cylinder. It could use new tires. I can't pass smog in California because of the catalytic converter delete, but I was planning on registering it in Ukiah where there are no smog restrictions. But given the circumstances with my engine issue and lack of funding, I haven't done it. Registration is all paid for, just need smog cert. I recently got a small dent on the driver's (left) side front fender. How much do you think a good and realistic asking price is? Please advise! Thank you! tecreatta
I wouldn't pay more than 700 dollars for a good rust free rolling chassis myself but thats the norm here in Houston. On craigslist 400-800 is a frequent for roller cars i.e. engine donor s130s. Too bad your engine went to the wayside. Z cars are an odd market. BluDestiny
The engine being bum is the biggest problem. I wouldn't pay more than a grand for it depending on how well all the electrical works and if I was looking for something as a daily driver. But who knows, if you put it up on craigslist for $2000 you might get lucky
JSM
In FL I don't think you would have any problem getting 2K for that clean of a car. Use this tool to search CL in CA. http://www.cheapcarfinds.com/ Love this little tool. Like this thing could not be worth 1K: http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/cto/2700717162.html Edited November 21, 2011 by JSM
BluDestiny
Yeah that's true, when I was checking out the CL adds in FL every clean bodied Z was going for what would have been a ridiculous amounts here in CA. There are actuall a few s130's here in LA that are going for way to much (read 6k+). Maybe Ebay is a better choice. Miles
Rebuild the head and get the car running well. You will be in better position to sell the car.
C-Dawg
Thanks everybody! I think I'm gonna put it on CL for $1500 and see what happens. All the electrical and everything else in the car is working fine. The car starts easily every time and I've never had any other problems with it. If it doesn't sell there, we'll try ebay. I just hope to get more than 1200 for it... There's nothing I would want more than to fix or swap the engine and keep it, but I don't have the money to do neither. Connor280ZX
I think $1,500 is a steal for that car. I've seen rebuilt P79 heads for $300-500 all over the internet. Roughly $200 for a CA CAT, maybe $100 to get it welded on. I think you will definatley get what you are asking for. Most people who aren't Z enthusiasts should see your price as a steal. Hell, i didnt know much about the value of Z's when i bought my 82 ZX for 7K and put 3K into it just to get it to work right, hah.
