Guest Anonymous
Just bought a running chevy 350. It was in a 73 suburban. The guy said it was a 1975 motor that has never been bored just a basic bottom end rebuild honed and what have ya. I was curious if putting on some new Vortec heads, cam kit along with a 600 650 carb would be a good way to go cheap on this and add a little extra horses before dropping in my Z. I got the motor and tranny for $200. Tranny was just rebuilt turbo350. Im going to get the 700r though for the 1975 Z. Any good combos with the vortec heads to get some power with where Im going on this? Im new here, and I enjoy the forum. Thanks
Tim240z
Silver, I did just that to my truck (71). The Vortec heads flow very well (better than the corvette heads). I used the Edelbrock RPM inlet manifold and a L98 cam grind. Make sure that you order the upgraded valve spring package when you order the heads (I ordered mine from Scoggin Dickey Chevrolet in Texas). The motor is very responsive, even in my big Cheyenne 20. pparaska
If that's a 75 motor, it may have severely dished pistons and a low compression unless you use 64 cc chambers. Even still the round dish takes away torque producing quench in the chamber. I don't mean to be negative, just passng some info along. Modern Motorsports Ltd
Vortec's are 64cc chambers Pete. Silver, I think you got a great plan for a fine easy power motor. Upgraded vortec heads with a decent newer style grind (as the vortecs flow fine intake and exhaust....so old wide dual pattern cams would not make the most of those heads.....with decent headers (someone was just posting today they'd sell....under the 20+ header post I think) and a vortec intake you're laughing. And money spent on heads and an intake is a GREAT place to drop some coin, you don't loose much on that investment. enjoy.....
Guest Anonymous
Thanks for the input guys. Im all ears on this ride. Should I get an RV cam for this same motor setup or should I be using something different? Would the 70-71 camaro SS or Z28 cam grind be a smart pick as well for this motor? Thanks! Mike C
Try and stay between 210 and 216 degrees duration at .050 for camshaft on a low compression motor. The Z/28 cams is too much for a motor with less than 10:1 compression, but the 300hp 350 cam would be OK. You'll make more power with an aftermarket grind. Camshaft theory has changed quite a bit since 1970. I like the Crane 266 as an excellent street grind.
