alainburon
I'm replacing my Evaporator as part of the restoration I'm doing on the car. Found a new evaporator with an expansion valve included. On the small line coming from the evaporator there is some sort of screen looking filter at the point where the hose from the A/C dryer connects to the firewall. I accidentally crushed the screen during the removal of the evaporator and can't find a replacement. What is the purpose of this screen and can it be removed? I have attached some pictures of it. Phantom
Have you tried going to your Nissan dealership or Motorsport Auto? If those fail, take it to a local shop that deals in auto A/c's and see if they have one from a different vehicle that will work. Nissan used similar parts in several vehicles so that filter may still be available from a different vehicle.

I tried a local Nissan dealer already and I may as well have gone to Taco Bell to ask for this part. They dont know a thing about these cars but if you have an Altima you are good to go. I will try Motorsport or a local A/C shop as you suggested. Thanks for the input.
surpip
it is just a filer to keep cotaminants out of the compressor the most important part is obviously the flare to make it seal another option would be to cut the screen off and find a replasement reciver/dryer with an internal filter and change the fittings to fit any true A/C shop should be able to help you get it working not just your local "complete" car care place. Also if its not crushed to badly you can use a pick and straiten it from the inside out use silver solder to fix any tears and some carb cleaner and it will be good as new another option is to look at pick an pull sometimes you will get lucky or evan ebay many options, good luck Edited January 4, 2012 by surpip

I spoke with the A/C company that I'm buying the evaporator from and they claim I don't need that filter since the evaporator they are selling me comes with an expasion valve and it has it's own built in filter. I will try a local pick a part and see if I can find it. I hate to leave it out and ruin a new compressor, evaporator and condensor. If I can't find one I may try your advice and try to straighten it out from the inside. It's not that badly damaged. Thanks for the help. surpip
Good luck let me know how it works out but keep in mind either way it has to be installed, as it the flare that seals it to the fitting.
cgsheen
The screen is a secondary protection for the expansion valve. That's why it's mounted where it is - on the liquid (high pressure) line just before the evaporator (just before the expansion valve). The screen is sized so that whatever will go through it will also pass through the expansion valve. If your new evap has an expansion valve with it's own filter, you don't need to worry about the original screen except as a seal for the flare connector. Won't hurt to have the stock screen in place, but won't be totally necessary with the new evap.
