RebekahsZ
Any progress? Why don't you assemble your diff with stock u-joint axles just to get some shake-down miles?
240z72
Keith: Well In short words ,Yes...lol. IT RUNS!!! Im still waiting on my headers but I bought some c5 manifolds to use as a temp thing just to fire the motor. I got the idea from a fellow member wfritts911. They work , but I wouldent use them long term. I got everything hooked up and ready to go using random z plug wires as extentions to provide room around the headers. I had to unbolt the coil packs also to do this. Well worth it. HAHA. Unbolted the valve cover coated the valve train in a half qrt. of oil each. Reinstalled the covers. I disconnected the fuel line hook up to the fuel rail and cycled the fuel pump into a bottel to flush the line of any c-rap outta the lines from cutting. Hooked it up, checked everything and turned the key....Crank crank crank..built oil pressure. Then hooked up the coil packs and triend for the first start.....nothing......WTF!!! Had fuel, compression but no spark. Checked over things...No power to coils with the key on start position...Weak... Walked inside crakced a beer, sat down and pulled out some books. Read up on power supply for them..did tests. No luck. Then DING DING!!! I went for my ignition relay. Shur enough I found when the key is in the start position I had no power to the relay causing the PCM to shut down. Ran a temp. jump wire to the relay.... and mother of God I awoke the beast! ....It scared me and my buddy filming, others came running haha...So all and all its alive, no problems. SO relived. I bought this motor on the word of a stranger that it runs well. It dose. Today I flushed the coolant system and filled it with coolant. Ran it for atleast 30mins befor I flushed it. Only leak I had was from the bleeder vent fitting. I dident tighten the clamps good enough. :/ Once I had the oil and coolant topped off I ran it for another 30 mins. bleeding air and checking charge, oil pressure and temp. Along with other things...I cant belive its running. So pleased. Gonna hook up my u-joint half shafts and putt around the block a few times until I get my adapter flages. Heres a quick vid of the start up that made us crap our pants lol. More to come. I thought I was motivated before. Lol Edited November 11, 2012 by 240z72
RebekahsZ
Congrats! I was at the track when you sent me the youtube link and it was super noisey. I could tell when it cranked up by how your camera man jumped! Its a big day. Lots of details left, but it won't be long before you are posting ETs! After working for 2 years on my swap (in a series of all night-er binges), it was a similar feeling to when Rebekah was born (actually when Rebekah was born I had mixed feelings of joy and scared shitless, where engine crank day was all joy). Finish the project well - I have had zero reliability issues directly related to the motor/trans itself. Every problem I have had I can directly relate to something bone-headed I did trying to take a shortcut.
240z72
Thanks Keith. I understand what you mean. I just got to keep at it. Ill be rolling around town here befor I know it. Im just relived the motor turns over well. Next for me is to hook up my clutch. Then the brake system.
wfritts911
So did I mention I copyrighted my design? I'm going to have to sue you now and take your car as evidence . Glad you got the header situation figured out, can you believe I have been running with my exhaust like that since March?? And the u-joint shafts will work ok depending on the shape of the joints, just don't shift very hard. You will have it done in no time now, once you hear that start you realize "Damn...this is actually gonna work!" Don't be afraid to hack those flanges off and weld some pipe up til your headers come in, it doesn't scare people too bad. Although the Cali emissions laws might not like them to well -Will
240z72
Haha thats good stuff. I almost cant belive you ran it like that lol. Must of been a terror on acceleration! Along with the backfires of deceleration haha. That just awsome though. All I plan to do with the u-joint shafts is get the thing rolling. I wont beat on it at all. Ive seen how many you have gone threw lol. Yes it was a big step for me to get that thing running. Seem like yesterday it was totally stirpped down to the short block. I still have a bit to do befor its road worthy but im very close. Sadly no stacks for me. I used the later c5 manifolds which are cast iron. Also they are angled different I think. Plus my headers came yesterday! They look great. Jet-Hot did a great job. Backed by lifetime warrenty I couldent be more pleased. Been lazy, all ive done is remove the c5 manifolds. I need to get my motor back in line and wire up my ignition relay better. Also need to switch my fan relay setup. I want my left fan to turn on first as thats where the inlet is. I had to pull the tach out to calibrate it as I brain farted that one. Notten like being contorted under the dash. Tell you what a blanket helps alot as a pad to lay on. I would like to be on the road by next year. Heres a quick pic of my headers. Heres some pics I just got from a friend that helped me drop in the motor and trans. Heres one of the amateur behind this operation hah!! Once I get so more stuff done ill post up! Just like to add THANK YOU ALL for your imput and advice. It means alot to have people helping me out and showing intrest.
wfritts911
Ah I thought those manifolds looked a bit different, guess your safe on the copyrights lol. That explains why you didn't have to hack them up to flip them upside down. I actually had to cut the flanges off of mine and turn the manifold upside down leaving the flange rightside up because the early C5 manifolds have an EGR tube across the top, which blocks the spark plugs and hits the head bolts. Keep up the good work, there is a light at the end of the tunnel now. Nice "shop" by the way! P.S. The flames are awesome at night, I'm pretty sure I scare people if I pass them in the dark. It throws flames like crazy at night. -Will
240z72
I did have to do some modding to get them to fit. I just cut off the EGR port with my torch and they fit. I saw what you ment about the manifolds hitting the pluggs. Once I cut it off they fit flush. Ya I love my shop haha got the whole thing for a 30 pack! keeps me dry. My garage is full of stuff for the work I do so I cant do it in there which is fine. Will post more as I get it done.
240z72
Small update. I installed the JTR headers. I noticed Jet-Hot left some beads stuck in the flange from when they bead blasted them. No big just a few taps with a hammer and the flange spun free. Install went very easy. Also cleaned up a few things a secured them like my coil packs and positive/negative battrey wires. I tried fiddeling with the dip stick but it was a lost cause. The one I had was all bent up and it was not worth the effort. So I need a new one. Tomorrow im going to reinstall my tach. As I removed it because I forgot to calibrate it. Switch my relay wires for my fans and a few other odds and ends. This weekend Im going to try and setup a temp exhaust and try and figure out something for the cut out in my hatch area for the fuel cell. I need to make a vent line also because it just dumps fumes into the cab. Big no no. Heres a few pics with the new coated headers. Looken good! 240z72
At DMV right now to get the car registered. Its 8am. Im dead tired. I work till 5am so I should be in bed but I wont wake up till 4pm so I stuck it out and went eairly. Shouldent be too bad of a wait. Small update. I got the dash back togeather. That was horrible. Glad im still young so I can flex and have brake and clutch pedals jammed in my head. Haha. Also installed my rear brakes nd drums. Installed my 27 spline stubb axles. And set it up tempary with the u-joint half shafts. Now that I have it running im itching to roll around the block! I need to still install the booster and master cylender for the brakes. Then I can bleed the system. I need to get a-3 fitting that will screw into my lutch master. So I can finish the clutch. I still need to torque the flange nuts for the stubb. But I need to eather run an airhose back to my car and rap on ot with the half inch gun. Or rent a 250lb torque wrench. I have I think 3 sets of u-joint axles that I can use for trial runs. I think Ill carry the extra four around haha. Its been raining something fierce here so progress has been really slow. Hours have been jacked up also. I also need to do exhaust and fab up a panel to cover the fuel cell. With access to the fuel fill cap. I hope to post more stuff ive done rather then bore you all with things I need to do. Sitting here typing is the only thing thats helping me not fall asleep waiting in line haha. More progress soon!!! Jim
rags
Jim, I love those 90 degree heater hoses! Where did you get them? Wouldn't happen to have a part number would you? Joe
240z72
Joe: I may just have what you need. I have all my receipts in a pile for a rainy day so I can total up the damage! Ill dig around and see what I can come up with. Honestly I wish I could clean up the clamps more. What you can do is go to your parts store and ask to see the hoses. The ones I used were really long 5/8" strait hoses with the 90* bend at one end. Make shur you get the ones that are 5/8" all the way threw. There was some that were sized different at one end. Ill post part numbers as soon as I find them. Jim
240z72
IM STOKED! I get to keep my stock plates! I was nerves that I would have to surrender them. But I had proof that they were the stock plates with some old registration papers I thank the lord I found. Just another cherry on the cake. The plates are really cool. They read ( 240 XXX) . Lucky...Well im a zombie and I need to sleep. LATER!!
240z72
Update: Got the cluth working. I have a tilton 7/8. Man that hydo bearing feels really smooth. With a mity vac I was able to bleed most of the air. I also bench bled it well. At first I had issues with the air. I ended up pulling it back out and using a 2x4 on my chest i was able to actuate the push rob as I cracked the bleeder screw on the remote bleeder. That made it soild. I tucked all my lines out of the way and thermal wrapped the lines that were close the the header. I can tell i need to adjust the clevis a bit as I think Its too far out. As its not fully releasing the clutch. I need to get the exhaust done before I can play with that. I also installed a battrey hold down. Nothing special but it dose the job. Waiting on a master from the parts store then I can get my brake online. More to come! Heres a few pics! ................well maby not.................... 240z72
Installed the brake booster. Had to mod the fire wall a bit. the rib that runs down the wall had to be ground down. also the master cylinder is on and fluid is drawn to each end. Waiting on a buddy to help me bleed them tomorrow. Also had a my body guy start on the car. Helped him wet sand the front end. He hit the fenders with some compound and man...that paint shines!! Would upload pics but I have no idea how..stupid update. Got my hood on. I hope to roll around the block as soon as I get a hand full of things done. 240z72
We are on the ground! Finished up things underneath and threw on the wheels. Set the ride height and started playing with installing my seat. Damn this car is low! After it being on jack stands for so long it seems like a skateboard haha. Hope to drive it in the next day or so. Will try and get a go pro vid. Wish i knew how to uplaod pic!!!!
