Who is running a CLSD and what is your setup?

I'd like to run a CLSD in my 78 UK spec 260Z in the original R200 casing. I was hoping to run a Kazz 1.5 way LSD but unfortunatly Kazz only do 2 way LSD's as replacements for open R200 differentials which is what I need as I'm running the Z31T CV axle upgrade.

 

 

 

 

I'm intersted to see who is running a CLSD and what make/type/model it is and what your setup is.

We have a R180 CLSD from a 2005(?) Subaru STi with a 3.54 gear ratio in our '73 240Z. We bought the side axles from Beta Motorsports which allow using the original 240Z drive axles. With the Beta Motorsport side axles this is a bolt-in installation using the original mustache bar and front mount.

Beermanpete, what kinda of HP are you laying down?  Just not too long ago another member was posting about how they were making something near 500HP and dropping the clutch at drag strips was causing snapped axles.  What do you presume your setup could handle? The Subaru CLSD sounds rad!

The engine is all stock, so about 150 at the crank according to Datsun. So far the Subaru LSD has worked well for 6 or 7 weekends at the track. We use the car for time trials not drag racing and road course work does not seem to stress the drive line the same way drag racing. I really don't know the power capability of the drive line.

The R180 LSD setup sounds easy, but isn't really suitable for me, my car has an R200 already and I will be running a bit of power.

 

 

For the long nose R200 your CLSD choices are:

OSG Super Lock

Kazz or Cusco 1.5 and 2 way (if they are available)

Used Nissan or PowerBrute CLSD.

 

Search on this site, escially in the Driveline FAQ.

Kazz don't do a 1.5 way as replacement for an open R200 diff. I'll look into a Cusco LSD and see if they do a 1.5, but they are a fair bit more expensive and not really any better. The only way I can run a 1.5 way Kazz LSD is to get one as a replacement for a VLSD but then my Z31T cv shafts won't work and I don't think there are any VLSD CV shafts that will fit the 260Z.

 

 

I was hoping more people would add to this thread so I can see what others are using and see what they think of their setup.

Yeah, I thought beermanpete was running more HP.  I just can't trust the R180 with the amount of power I'm putting in, and I think EF IAN is in the same boat.

 

Sorry I couldn't be of more help, man.  I also want to run a CLSD, but you are WAY ahead of me in your project at this point.  :(

78Z/250GTO - I love the Quaife in my FWD EF9, its great for that but I just don't think it will suit what I'm looking for with the S30, would certainly be good in a road only car but as I intend to also track mine the way the quaife behaves when a rear wheel lifts doesn't suit me,

 

 

zohanisback - yeah, I will be running more power than I feel happy putting through an R180.

 

 

 

I do believe I have found a CLSD that is a direct fit for my R200 without even the need for shims as it has 10mm ring gear not 12mm. Problem is it rather expensive, but you pay for quality.

Yeah, its a LOAD of money, Cusco quality is spot on though and it can be adjusted from 1.5 way to 2 way if desired but I think I'll look for cheaper options first, like a Nismo unit if I can find a 1.5 way one that fits.

 

 

 

I'm going to have a lot of work going on when I'm home from work next so I'll definitly have a build thread.

Hi ian,

 

ive got the 260z r200 (280z your side of the globe).

I installed an aftermarket tomei CLSD 2 way, from an r32 gtr skyline, almost went straight in except the below extra activities.

made 10 off small bushes for the crownwheel bolts, ie Z uses M10 and the 32gtre had 13mm bolts (not 12mm for some reason which we all thought they were) so some cylindrical spacers which took up the slop from the holes to the bolt.

and i had to get another circlip groove cut into one side output shaft, cant remember which one right or left its been a while, only thing i needed was the supplied shims and bearing races which came from the donor dif housing, checked mesh and its spot on.

the 32 gtr output shafts also had 29 splines as does the 260/280z so i still utilise the the Z half shafts with uni-joints.

Was a relatively easy swap although i took it to a ""diff professional"" first to get them to do the swap, obviuosly too hard for them, they sent it out to their ""engineer"" whom also said it wouldnt go,

taught those guys and their expert a lesson.

I had sufficient info and trial fits in front of me to proove it but they almost died when i took it back to them to show them how little work was req'd.

almost any 29 spline CLSD will work, subaru/fuji heavy ind know their s*&t,

just make sure your not trying to use viscous shafts or 31 spline shafts........

this will open up heaps of avenues for you.....

this swap requires you to change the carrier, so open CLSD or whatever the guts goes and the new carrier is a complete assy, just need to whack on your crownwheel and get the mesh right (take to a qualified shop to do so, even some specialist have trouble.)

Thanks for that, at least I can use that as a backup and fit nearly any diff. Whatever diff I get though, it can't be as a replacement for a vicous lsd can it as the viscous output shafts would be longer than open or clsd ones wouldn't they? But still this gives me the option of any clsd or open diff replacement LSD.

How about...If you would like to maybe save some coin, buy a used Nismo 1.5 way LSD from any or either of the online or other communities?

these can be had for under $600 Australian.

Heaps of nissans use the R200, you just need to check a few things first.

-Spline count on output shafts

-Bolt diametre used on Crownwheels

-inside Dia. of the crownwheel, (just incase its a weird one, ie not 200mm)

try to stay away from the viscous units, yes they do have 1 longer side shaft, but sometime also have funny spline counts, or shaft dia's.

I would do if I could find any, had no luck so far. Always hard to get confirmation of the fitment and measurements too and I don't want to be buying the wrong one.

Something like that would be good, better if I can find one in the UK though, saves on postage and import duty and vat.

 

I'm thinking about changing my diff now to a 4.1 ratio to go better with a GTS-T gearbox, pity I can't swap it all accross from that diff. Hoping to find a long nose 4.1 R200 from an S12 Silvia.

 

 

 

Might end up being easier just to swap a whole diff unit like that, I'm thinking that if my Z31T cv shafts mate with that ok then all I'd need to do to fit a short nose R200 like the above would be to fab a new front mount for it?

 

 

 

 

Not to hijack your thread, and thus I direct the question to the OP (or anyone else), but what made you choose a 1.5 over a 2 way?  Just better streetability and corning on engine braking?

I think a 2 way would be a bit hardcore for my intended use, I think a 1.5 way would be better on the road and better on engine braking, probably less understeer.
