IncompetentOne
1977 280z 2+2. non-California model. The car is getting spark and the oil pump timing is dead on i believe. Since the car only needs spark fuel and air to run, i am not sure what it could be. I have the manuals but i am still troubled by this. any help appreciated. 78zstyle
How do you know you aren't getting fuel? Fuel pressure gauge? You can pull the injectors and see them squirt too.
IncompetentOne
well i Know the car is getting Air, so the only other culprit could be the spark timing or the fuel.
IncompetentOne
and the car will fire if i spray starting fluid in it so i dont believe it is the spark
Domzs
At least the igntion system seems to be ok . Now you need to check your fuel system , like pressure and injector pulse .
NewZed
Supply more information. The engine ran at one time, otherwise it would not have made it from 1977 to today. Something happened in the meantime. The ECU grounds the injectors when it detects that the coil has created a spark three times. If the injectors have power, they will open. If there is pressure in the injector, it will squirt. Edited May 10, 2013 by NewZed
IncompetentOne
The head gasket decided it hated life and detonated itself. I replaced it, now i am just in the process of troubleshooting to get it running again. L28 EFI 1977. what could stop the injectors from working properly? Is it still possible that the ignition timing could be off?
NewZed
The ECU and injectors don't care about ignition timing. Pin 1 at the ECU connector is supposed to be connected to the negative terminal of the coil. One simple thing you can do is check continuity from Pin 1 to that post. Is everything re-assembled as it was before you replaced the head gasket or are you trying to start it before putting everything back together? Or did you do a few other things while you were in there?
IncompetentOne
Well I just want the car to start, so I left off the ac pump, put on a new cylinder head, carbon canister has been taken out but I have not yet closed up the hoses that the tubes led to, the thermostat housing cracked so currently none of those wires are hooked up as i have not sourced a new one yet. I am trying to get consistent air/ fuel/ and spark out of the car so I can see if it is back together properly or if I need to do another tear down
NewZed
You have a vacuum leak from the carbon canister hoses and a very rich condition from the coolant temp. sensor being disconnected. Who knows which is causing your no-start. The thing about the EFI is it really really likes to have everything connected and working correctly. IncompetentOne
could i just block off the holes/ passages or should i put the canister back in? also: the previous owner did one hell of a job of leaving random wires unplugged with nothing to connect it to. is there a place where i could get a wiring diagram or photos of some sort? NewZed
www.xenons30.com/reference or http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/280z/1977/ Engine Fuel chapter. Unfortunately the 1977 FSM isn't separated by chapter. It's a pain, you have to download the whole thing.
