deuce8ernerozero
I would like to know what everybody is running for dwell on their megasquirt direct (single) coil control on thir l-gata z. For example the stock ballasted 280z coil. The " hot" z31 300z coil and various performance coils.
skirkland1980
I've run from 3-5 on an msd 8202 coil. Seems to perform about the same within that range.
BLOZ UP
Z31 Coil: 2ms MSD Blaster canister: 3ms That's what I've run for a while on each. Z31 coil never seemed to like more than 2ms.
deuce8ernerozero
Thanks guys you are a big help. Does the z31 coil need a ballast or capacitor? I've been hearing about some kind if cap to help it charge? That and which color wire on the harness is pos and neg?
BLOZ UP
Any ballast resistor is just to save wear on the distributor/points/whatever crap. You only need a ignition transistor, which MS usually comes with on the board itself.
deuce8ernerozero
Z31 Coil: 2ms MSD Blaster canister: 3ms That's what I've run for a while on each. Z31 coil never seemed to like more than 2ms. The z31 coil works great! My starting dwell is at 4.0ms. Is it ok to go a little longer? BLOZ UP
Don't know, never scoped it out. Let me be more specific--my Z31 ignitor and Z31 coil setup never liked more (or less) than 2.0 ms (+/- 0.2ms) of dwell. Spark was noticeably weaker, and my ignitor would heat up like crazy. One time it failed until it cooled. Edited January 12, 2014 by BLOZ UP
deuce8ernerozero
I guess I wasnt clear enough. My running dwell is 2.0ms. My cranking dwell is 4.0ms. Are you running 2.0ms for both?
BLOZ UP
Ah, I see. I don't remember what cranking dwell was. 4.0ms is fine, given that you have 9v or less at the coil and it's only for a few seconds.
