Lone Star 1 Posted March 11, 2002 Share Posted March 11, 2002 The JTRs book says the Taurus fan you want comes off a 1990 or new model and has a powerful two speed fan identified by the three heavy wires that go into the motor. The day I spent at the junk yard I look at over a 100 Taurus's all of which had had the fan already removed. As I was walking between the cars I found two fans setting in the trunk of one car. I grabed them both and was charged $25 each. I mounted mine by slipping one end under the lip of the collector end pan and brassing two 1/4 20 brass bolt to the other end pan where the fan shroud already had holes and put 1/4 20 brass nuts and washers to hold the fan in place. Fit really well and I run the fan on low speed. One of the wires is the ground, one is for low and the other is for high. Don't hook up all three it will burn up the fan motor. Supposedly those are three speed too - mine wasn't Three lugs but power to either of the hot ones yielded the same speed no matter what. I made some brackets out of plate aluminum, cut the massive mounting ears off, rigged something for the bottom, and am happy as a clam with mine. Look over the pics on my site and at Pete's pics - I got my ideas from him. Mine is setup so that I can manually flip it on or use the thermo switch - is working great. It is for the GN-powered 2nd-gen RX-7 and because the radiator is slanted, clearance down by the crank pulley is tight. This is just a stock 3.8L for trial fit and for working out the kinks from the swap while the monster motor is getting finished up. Note no I/C, oil filter bracket, etc. Also note the exclusive use of Parker Push-Lok hose for everything. Great stuff. So far, SO GREAT! looking forward to 550-575rwhp. Scottie-GNZ Posted March 18, 2002 Author Share Posted March 18, 2002 The Taurus fan did not fit either, so out of desperation we got a Ford Escort fan for a 1.9L engine!! It has a 16" fan, 3 wires and is completely shrouded and we figured had to be better than the one pictured above. We tested it on the low speed, then switched to HI and were not prepared for the gale-force wind coming out of that thing. With the wimpy 16" fan, the engine ran 195-200* and if we popped the hood it would drop to 190*. With the Escort fan wire to run on high, the fan is triggered by the chip to kick in a at 173* and within 1 minute, the temp drops to 162*. Yesterday, in mid-80s sun, it never went over 175*, even in traffic and an ATM drive-thru. Cannot imagine how much better the Taurus or Cobra fan is but we certainly do not need it and this one draws less than 25 amps. I also have a Taurus two speed fan and it is tight but can be done..Just very Tight. I will never go back that sucker humps some serious air on high. I need it because I live in the Lone Star State.
