L33roller
So after some extensive researching and reading. I'm strongly leaning on getting the rear Diff from a 2005 STI with the 3.9 ratio. I've read that many people use this diff, and it has been but not behind an lsx motor. I'm planning on having a 5.3l with around 350hp, so it should hold up. But I was wondering if any other members could chime in who have this set up.
RebekahsZ
The problem isn't the diff. The problem is the axles.
L33roller
Yeah, I've looked into the Wolf Creek Racing CV Halfshaft Axle Kits. And Its the best and only option that I've found that will work other than getting a solid axle in the back.

Old Man
Nope! Just "Nope" and nothing after the "Nope"? Can you please expound or share your reason for "Nope"?
johnc
The R180 has a 7" ring gear. I raced with 275 ft lbs and would get the diff so hot you couldn't touch it without gloves. IMHO, that's the limit of its torque handling.
Old Man
Hi John, Very important bit of information! Looking at options myself and not wanting to waste money. It's important to me to find someome with experience and not just an opinion. Thank you very much for sharing!
NewZed
The size of the ring gear is definitely a limiting factor. It's about leverage. But the too hot for an ungloved hand, maybe not so relevant. That's not very hot. I love a good reason to go dig up some obscure information though. I'm sure the diff got much hotter than too hot for a hand. http://ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/casi.ntrs.nasa.gov/20100020960.pdf
Savage42
Also depends on whether you are going to drag race it (one extreme) or just in a street car with tires with a 300+ treadwear rating. It will work for one and not the other, it's what you do in between that leaves a question mark. Sticky tires, autocrossing, etc. will be on factor and it's torque that kills the diff & axles, not HP. Better to be a little on the "beefy" side than too "light". johnc
IR heat gun said the cover and case were typically at 260 degrees after a 30 minute track session. Less gear contact area means more force and heat generated at the point of gear contact.
RebekahsZ
L33roller. It depends on your usage. Do it, and report back. My bet is that at some point, you will break an output stub. If you drag race it every weekend, I bet it's broken within a month. If you daily drive it in traffic in town on sunny days it may last 10 years. L33roller
I went under the car for the first time since buying it and it turns out the rear end was already converted to a r200. I thought it was all stock, but I guess ill stay with the r200 now since its proven to withstand more power.
