Mikelly
Well guys my Cutler FI harness and computer are on E-bay and not doing well at all... However, I'm moving forward with research on EFI ECUs (Programable with Datalogging) and harnesses... I'm still leaning towards the Holley Commander, since I can get pretty much everything I need for $900, but I'd like to investigate other options before making the final commitment on one system... KAZU
I did a long research about aftermarket ECUs, then I picked up a DTA P8PRO. Now I'm going to set a crank position sensor and a teeth wheel on my L28.
240Z Turbo
John, I spoke with Jim today as he is doing some mods to my turbo head. He also built my 3.06L turbo motor. I have been in the shop and it is very clean and organized. Expect to wait a bit, but you should be happy with the results. Let us know the specs of the new motor and why did you decide to go with Sunbelt?
johnc
Mike, I'm having Jim Thompson at Sunbelt build me a 3.0L L6 and he STRONGLY recommended DTA: http://www.dtafast.co.uk/. I later talked with Javier at JG Engine Dynamics, who is a Motec distributor, and he said DTA was about the best. That's what's going on my engine. If you can wait until the end of August, I'll tell you all about it.
240Z Turbo
John, my initial leak down tests after about 3 months were all less than 1% using XC rings and 4 of 6 were about 1/2%. I more recently did a leakdown of the motor with over 1year of hard boosting and had less than 1.5% on the cylinders I tested. I think having an understanding of the importance of the finish hone on the cylinders will ensure that the motor correctly seats and has very little leaddown. Anyway, thanks for the response and let us know the progress of the motor.
Mikelly
I know all to well about leak down and losing serious HP... My 10 second 1/4 mile passes when the motor had 200miles on it went to 8.75 second 1/8 mile passes after repeated fuel problems and several cylinder wall wash downs... I'll be going through my motor over the winter and doing a complete internal balancing, as well as re-ringing the pistons with total seal rings after the cylinders are properly honed... John, I'll be waiting to hear about your FI setup... Mike Kelly
randy 77zt
if you goto datafast's website you can download a software sample -it is very easy to use .i have been playing with it for a while and is 10 times better than haltech's dos program.datafast has an ad in racecar engineering magazine for a unit for 350 quid-i think thats about $750.depends on the features you need .somebody that actually works in the computor industry shold have no problem with the datafast program. johnc
I'm having Jim build an engine for my exBSP 240Z to run in the new Street Modified 2 SCCA Solo2 class. For more rules information, go here: http://streetmodified.org. My engine requirements are: 1. 3.0L max displacement. 2. Normally aspirated. 3. As much and as flat a torque curve as possible from 3,500 to 7,000 rpm. 4. 275hp minimum (at the crank as measured on their Clayton dyno). 5. Runs on 100+ octane fuel. 6. Less than 5% leakdown over 200 hours of use. According to the SM2 rules, the minimum weight of my car with that engine configuration is 1,900 lbs. Right now, my car weighs 2,260 lbs. I should be able to easily take another 200 lbs out of it and still meet the rules. I think the car will be pretty quick... When Jim dynos the engine I'm flying out there and video taping the event. Probably sometime near the end of August. Why did I go with Sunbelt? 1. Conversations with Keith Thomas and Don Potter. 2. Donn Vickrey's Sunbelt ITS engine pulled 10 car lengths Bryan Lampe's JG Engine Dynamics ITS engine on the dragstrip at Firebird Raceway. 3. A long conversation with Jim Thompson about heads. Mikelly
Randy, I downloaded the demo last night...Very cool stuff... I sent them an e-mail with a host of questions. Mike
Mikelly
UPDATE: Just got an e-mail back from DATAfast and the price for JUST the ECU is $1245 US. This puts it in the same price range as Electramotive. I can get EVERYTHING I need from Holley for the Commander for $900 shipped. I'll be interested in feedback from John Coffee! Mikelly
OK, My secretary just came into my office to see what the hell I was laughing at, and then she still didn't get it... To damned funny John... True, we won't get the real scoop until the NEXT engine you build after this one, which be out-dated info!!!! LMAO! Modern Motorsports Ltd
If I was buying any EFI system I'd be polling the folks on the DIY EFI list http://www.diy-efi.org/ sales guys can talk and Holley recently bought the commander line, they didn't develop it at all so I've heard skepticisms on their support of it. Might be great but their's gotta be a reason it's way below the rest. Holley isn't typically 'cheap' on pricing. Their was a recent notice (2 months back) on a decent system with wideband O2 etc for very good pricing for anyone going that route. http://www.diy-efi.org/ and sign up on the list for any and all info...they are technical and informed so do your homework Zya their
johnc
> I'll be interested in feedback from John > Coffee! You think (after paying stupid amounts of money for my engine) that I'll say anything bad about it?
