Dadddio
I'm doing a 240sx 5 spd swap. I pulled the rear cover off for inspection. Things look pretty good except for the reverse idler gear. Can I just replace this without tearing the whole thing apart?
NewZed
You can see the clip to let the idler gear free. Find out how to get the fifth gear removed to let it come off the shaft. Might be shown in the manual, MT chapter. Looks like you can pull 5th and change the idler then put it all back together. Get a new nut before you start, you'll probably destroy the old one when removing it. http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/nissan-240sx-factory-service-manuals.html Try a more descriptive title of your thread also if you want to get some views. "Reverse idler gear" doesn't really draw the eye.
duragg
That gear is fine. Run it.
Dadddio
It looks doable. But I'd rather not change it if it's not necessary. More opinions would be appreciated.
duragg
Do you have a replacement that looks better? I have a box with a half dozen of them that all look like that. Really wouldn't bother for that particular gear.
yellowoctupus
If you were worried about it chipping apart worse, you could try to grind/sand/polish the chipped corners down to alleviate some of those stress risers at the chipped edges. At least it might keep some chunks from chipping off later and churning into bearings etc.
Dadddio
Went ahead and got a new gear and countershaft bearing and nut. Less than $50. Took about 20 minutes The hardest part was getting the snap-ring off. What would cause this to happen to the reverse idler? I don't see any evidence of damage anywhere else?. Thanks for the help. NewZed
Leaking clutch slave cylinder = poor disengagement = inability to easily get in to reverse without grinding = angry driver forcing through the grind = chipped reverse gears.
