What is involved in an RB swap into 240?

I was thinking about swapping a RB series engine into a 240z, and i was wondering what was involved. I've heard you can use the z-31 engine mounts and it drops straight in- is this true? Also with the gts-t r33 gearbox what modifications are required to fit this. Is it alot easier using a rb20det or rb25det than the rb26dett due to the fourwheel drive system? Also with the electronics how hard is it to wire up the computer etc, will i be able to do it myself? Finally what is required on top of engine, gearbox and electrics? Thanks

Stony outta be able to help you out on this one. He's got an RB26DETT in his Z. I recall him saying something about jspec Z31 engine mounts? Hang in there, he'll drop something here soon.

check out that one, he put the Rb20det in, he used the original loom, and wired it himself, (just takes time), and he used custom mounts to get it all the way back as possible.

I've heard you can use the oringal mounts, and use Rb30 mounts to the Rb, and it will be fitted good. also if you can find a Rb30 sump it will fit with no modifications,

rb-26 is the hardest to do... if you use the jspec z-31 rb-20 engine mounts any rb motor bolts right in.... if you use teh r-33 gtst tranny and front half drive shaft the shaft does not need to be modified....the tranny mounts are the only thing you have to fabricate.

now to the specifics.

rb-20.

--needs the jspec z31 rb-20 oil pan and sump

--i dont think this motor will clear the hood with the z-31 mounts

rb-25

same as the rb-20 just a bigger dispacement..also has teh same clearence problems.

rb-25/26

the most popular and easy / kinda expensive.

get and rb-25 block and all the parts above then install all rb-26 internals and externals on this blcok and this is the easiest boltin application but the block is not as strong but will withstand 500+ HP no problem

MY SWAP icon_biggrin.gif

rb-26. i rounded up all the parts mentioned above. the 2.6 block is alot different then the 2.0-2.5. i had to cut an area out of the rb-20 pan and make it bigger to fit the bearing retainers... also had to hammer on teh side of it to get the sump to fit/ this was kinda flaky, i was worried it would leak but it didnt. the most tricky thing was makeing the sump. it had to weave from the front of the block to the rear where the sump is. After i got the oil pan on it was home free from there... made the tranny mounts and everything bolted right in.

Mounts.. the z-31 mounts place the motor a little bit too far fwd then i liked. but the height is perfect. bottem of oil pan even with a frame. the engine cold be moved back about and inch or so if your concerned with weight distribution. but then custom mounts shortened shaft are required.

My opinion... if your in japan go for it its alittle expensive but well worth it. im running 11.138 1/4 on basically a bone stock engine and stock booste (soon to change icon_biggrin.gif )

if your in the states build and v-8 or swap a supra engine. the rb motors are expensive in the states and parts are a pain. unless you have a friend in japan. there is a supra twin turbo 500+ hp 240 on ebay right now for 10500 (steal) if i didnt allready have mine id be pickin that one up

if you have any more ????? feel free to email me... allthough ill do anything to help cant get ya any parts as i live in alaska (3more years) I plan on getting back to japan then maybe start up some kind of used part import business ;>. there is stuff selling on ebay for 1000% yes 1000% over what you can get it in japan for... ie gtr twin turbos. i just bought a set off japan yahoo for 31 bucks. they are t-25 turbines and a set sold on ebay last week for 710 bucks!!!!

anyways enough ramblin

well in my opionion if you have access to this engine for under 3000 (rb-26) it is worth going with the 2.6 the stock eng is good for 600HP with only bolt on stuff. If you can get a good low milage engine upgrade injectors, turbo, EMS, ect and youll will be very happy. the rb motor run very smooth and with a 3inch dia or bigger exhaust are very quite and very strong. Ive been i japan for most of my vehicle modding life so im kinda bias im sure there are combos you can do with a v-8 to get as much power but im not sure.

alan... u get can Rb26dett for 6000 no problem in australia, 8000 is with gearbox, and thats at expensive places...

SSS automotive

adelaide jap sell them for 6500 and stuff, gearboxes for 1300

i'd recomend the Rb26dett it says its only 208kw, cause of laws, but i've heard 230kw 240kw dynoed, and like stonys setup.

look how fast that is..

get custom mounts everywhere, and a Rb30 sump

i've asked Jap import places for Z31 Rb20 motor mounts, and most say they don't got emm, and its very rare to find a Rb20det Z31 on the roads of aust, let alone in the wreckers..

but just a suggestion if you really want the Z31 Rb mounts, you could possible source them from nissan japan. worth a try

alan ur in adelaide yer, do you have to get it engineerd, like u gotta have big enough breaks to support the Hp coming from the converted motor

and i think stony is saying US$3000 so that be around AU$6000 anyway..

but think about it how much would it cost to build a Rb20det to the KW figures of a Rb26dett, or a v8 etc, with the upgrade-ability, ease of instalation (well not that easy but i've seen it in the engine bay and its not cluttered and easy to work on) its worth the extra $$ my opnion, but ur Zed ur money.

tell us ur decision

so don't the z31 mounts come from the 1st gen 300zx? I think the rb26dett is definately the go, it also has great scope for modifying smile.gif It will have to be engineered, so that will cost me money. This is what i want to do, now all i have to do is start saving...

Will i be able to do the swap myself (except for tuning etc)?

yer they do, sorry if i didn't get what i was saying across, the Z31 RB20det version (200zr) didn't get imported here thou nissan it only got privitely imported, and therefore the mounts will be very rare to find in australia, the Z31 that got imported by nissan to australia had the Vg30det engine in it.

if you have the tools, time and skills you will be able to do most of it urself, I've helped put a Vg30det into a early Z (well i didn't really help i just stood around drinking the beer).

For me i don't have the fabricating skills to make the mounts, exhaust or driveshaft mods, so i'll be getting someone else to do that, which won't be that hard.

If there is a Z specialist shop in adelaide go to them, and asked them about ur project and see what they can do for you, and asked for there advice etc. but be careful, most of those Z specialist shops are really into keeping the Z original and stuff, so be careful about that.

if you cant get the z-31 mounts and your gonna make your own i would recommend setting the engine as far back as possible. this will also need a custom driveshaft.

the dollar amounts i was talking was US $ sounds like you guys in austrailia get stuff for about the same price as those in japan.

really stony, damn that aright... but the prices for parts are a bit more expensive but an't to bad, just like any other import car i spose.

custom driveshafts don't cost to much, and you could possible get a stronger thicker one, that could be better...

i gota start saving also... hehe... at least 10g for the engine transplant

  • 1 year later...

Bb30zx, I will send you the file when I get to work Monday, the flanges use the stock 240 rubber mounts and bolt to the side of an RB26. then I cut up the angle to fit my jigs.

81na ZX, the RB26 I have is first and only RB block I have ever seen, but from what I hear all the RB blocks are the same...but dont quote me on that.

I just up loaded some photos on the Album you can see the mounts there. or on my link.
