Now the Education begins...

Well the Turbo Kit was a big hit. The kid loved it. He is now saving his money for an H22 motor transplant into his 94 Civic. I'm gonna order the hoses and Tclamps from Hoover and I'll get the Downpipe made by Alex... I have another extremely DUMB question... Do we retain a Catalytic converter when we have his exhaust made? If not, what do we do for inspection purposes? Again, these are new waters for me... The kid has $800 saved up to assist in the additional parts to get this turbo on his car, and I suspect we'll be installing it in January, He'll probably toast the motor by April, at which time we should have the H22 motor in house to install...

Remember, I did say let the learning begin... I think we may try to snag an SDS for the H22 setup so when can do some standalone tuning around the Honda stuff...

It works out well for marketing and sale purposes to cater to the Honda crowd for performance items in Mike's new business. Plus, the Honda is better car NOT to kill himself in anyway. V8Z's can be deadly in the hands of the inexperienced.

Davy is correct. If the Zcar business was so wonderfull you wouldn't have guys like me making parts in our residential garages... We'd be able to pick up our 290 page copy of Muscle Zcars and Fast Nissans every month with tons of vendors and parts inside to order for! Instead I pick up copies of Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords, and Sport Compact Car and see the host of aftermarket support... It is THEIR generation, not mine. However, On the UP SIDE, I don't have to worry about outrageous insurance on his Honda, where as if he wanted a Zcar or a 5.0 Mustang... $$$$$$

mikelly i am in the same process u are right now. turbo'ing my little civic D series. that turbo will spool up nicely on that car. www.honda-tech.com go there and tell your son to read up in the forced induction forum and post some question. (or use the search function because they have a huge list of archived topics!) now i will tell you this. if he runs that thing over 5psi he is gonna be running lean, detonate and kaboom u know... u can buy an SMC controller off zip at honda tech for i think 250$ and u get the 450cc injectors with it. with this unit u can safely run 8psi without detonating.

i know that zip is working on a SMC+ and it will be out very soon so u should wait to buy that if thats the route i want to take for the cheapest price.

about that h22 you are going to install in the civic. now i will tell you now u will have huge understeer and the thing will handle like a hog. look into other motors like b18c5 b18c b16a b18a/b and b20z/b. all these b series motors are great and can pull some very nice times when they are boosted and tuned. hope to see you on honda tech smile.gif

here is another great website for home made turbo kits. v8 guys welcome also! http://www.homemadeturbo.com/forum/index.php#1

Mike, before you guys go and get the Prelude motor for that Civic, YOU need to come down here and drive my buddies B18 powered CRX. That thing rocks. WAY faster than you'd imagine. Full throttle in the first three gears, and it's spinning the tires. He is getting ready to put a B16 V-tech head on it also. That will wake it up about 25hp. It will have about the same HP as a Type R B18, but have more torque. The car is a riot to drive, I'm trying to talk him to turboing it, but then it will NEVER get traction. When he first installed the motor, it made 123whp, I built him a 2" mandrel bent exhuast with a flowmaster and a resonator, and it made 137 peak hp, and 15hp more over the entire RPM band. He has a Greddy header, otherwise it's stock, and uses the CRX computer. It would be better with the Acura computer.

yea mike even tho i despize hondas i would recomend a b18a outta a wrecked interga GSR or order one but the h22 is bigger and i mean way bigger and most that do that conversion cant fit a turbo in plus the b18 loves to rev and has good chartirsitcs to be a turbo motor but this is just my 2cents from helping the guys down here that dont know a valve cover from an intake mainfold

Well I'm in it deep now boys... The son had $900 saved up so we bid on a B18 in Seaford NY and I won it for $465... We're going to go get it next weekend... Looks like we'll have a motor to put in as well as the turbo setup!

I'll swing by and pick up that Bow Tie Block from SuperDave while I'm in that Neck of the woods!

Hmmm, B18 with a turbo... GEE wonder what kinda boost we can get out of that???

The best way to go IMO, if your son can afford it (I'm also a kid a with a 90' hatch and a Z car that I am both trying to build a little. Well, the hatch isn't really mine, but it was given to us by our cousins. It's going to be the car for my little bro and sis. Brother hasn't gotten around to getting his license, but we are still doing stuff to it) have the B18 resleeved to 2.0L. Build the bottom end a little and them get the turbo set up going. From what I understand, don't mess with the VTEC if you are going turbo. That thing will have torque so he won't be reving the crap out of it all day long to get it to go anywhere. That little civic has been quite a ride though. Never fast enough to get me in any trouble. Now that I've learned a little more control, the Z will be nice. Oh, I just got the PDK strut braces for the Z and my tranny should be done in a few days. Maybe some ZF racing suspension parts on the way when I'm done paying my parents for the head work and strut braces . Sorry to ramble javascript:void(0)

Wink , but I'm a little excited. Just my 2 cents

Ye aShorty I got you e-mails... YOu know ALOT more about this stuff than I do...

We're gonna look for new rods pistons and crank and build it while it is out. I also need to find the axles and tranny since this motor comes with NONE of those... Which is why we only paid $460 for the motor.

Since I don't know jack about a Honda B18a/b/c/d/e/f/g/..., I'll just call it a B18. I may refer to Type R engines or LS engines, VTECH, non-VTECH, WHAT EVER!!! BTW, any B18 is better than a D16 right?
