Andrew Bayley
I had a few minutes this weekend to mock up the passenger side header and take some pictures of the starter clearances. I don't remember exactly which starter I'm using (I've had it for about five years now), but it's about the largest starter for a SBC that one could possibly find. Tim240z
Andrew, What are the specs on those headers? Are they S&S units? BTW Is that a ford Sierra in the driveway (XR4Ti)? Do you like it? Tim
Andrew Bayley
Jeesh you're quick! Headers are the S&S units that MSA sells in their catalog. 1 and 3/4 inch primary's with 3 inch collectors. Yup, I got my Dad into the XR scene a few back. He had a three month period after selling his old Ranger before the New F-250SD arrived. In the lee way, he was driving around my '87 XR4Ti. 17 psi boost, T-bird intercooler, T-bird Vane Meter, three inch exhaust, yadda, yadda, yadda... all the typical stuff. Anyway, once he got the truck, he missed driving the old Merk. I found a nice '89 for him that needed some body and motor work. Picked it up for a song, painted the front half, through on a front mount IC, three inch exhaust, and all the other goodies. It's probably a high 14 second car. There is more in her, but I don't feel like fooling around with my Dad's car every day. Besides, I need to keep him under control and make sure he doesn't get too out of hand. After all, he is turning 55 this summer! -Andy
John Scott
Thanks Andy. I think we can see how these headers were fit around a standard size starter. I think Rick Johnson's measurements of 3" were to the solinoid or ?? The starter bolts to the same surface as the oilpan. Do the math: 2- 1.75" pipes plus a 4 1/4" starter depth (mini) plus about an inch clearance, you come up with 8.75". This is way lower than a stock oilpan. I'm going to ask Loren this week what he came up with, but after studying pictures all weekend, I don't feel we're going to gain much under the right side.
