HI

I just bought my first Z a 1976 280, 4 speed,with Fuel Injection. So be kind I

know next to zip about Datsun's. What are some of the basic perfomance

modifications to get a little more power and not total kill the fuel milage.

The car is prmarily a toy I drive it to work once in a while, but mainly I want set

it up for handling. It is all bone stock right now. What are some of the Z's

problem areas or things to watch out for? The car is a rust free So. Cal. car

so that much is good.

Depending on how deep you want to get into it, don't spend any money on the inline 6 if you want real, useable, reliable horsepower. Save your money and buy a LT1, T56 (or 4L60E). V8 is the way to go. I know many people have poured $$ into the OEM engine only to yank it for a 'real' monster.

It is true that a turbo or a swap to a V8 will give better, more reliable power.

However, if you feel like spending money on the N/A L6, then you can do some minor tuning things like: bigger throttle body, ram air intake, high performance ignition, headers, 2.25" to 2.5" exhaust system with performance muffler, K&N air filter, etc. All these things will make a difference, but won't be nearly as effective unless you throw something like bumping compression, going to a more radical camshaft, having the head ported, etc. into the mix. Keep in mind that you should add up the costs of doing these things and then compare the figure to a V8 swap. The $$$ difference may surprise you; that's why so many guys on this forum have gone to Turbo 280ZX engine swaps, Turbo Buick V6 swaps, and assorted V8 swaps. Use the search function to look up all the information on what you want, and most of all, welcome to the forum!!

This is probably the wrong thread for this, but I,m looking to go to an electric fan to relieve the crank of some drag. I,ve come across a 300zx fan('85-'85), and am wondering how I would go about wiring it in.

Rust free eh?.. thats one very good thing you have going for you. The fuse links can be a problem.. Also the connections on the fuse box (they get corroded)

Give her a good tune up, advance the timing a bit.. for starters..

about the electric fan deal....that has been a debate for quite a while...

I have seen tests where a stock clutch type fan is less of a hp hog than an electric fan... It all depends on how much you use the electric fan and if your clutch on the fan is in good condition...
