what is the status of the AEM engine management system?

Or rather the AEM engine management system.

I will be needing one that data logs, and Haltech is the best fit right now. A lot of people seem to be saying wait for the AEM to come out. Can anyone point me to a link that gives more info and maybe a price estimate?

AEM has been selling the Wolf3D system from Austrailia for a few years. It is a great system at a fair price. It does data logging, which can be seen on its hand held LCD display, or on a computer. It supports multiple fuel/ignition maps through a memory cartrige. You can switch between the two when ever you'd like, and make map changes on the fly. Supports multi coil packs and sequential spark and fuel up to 4 cylinders, and then does paired batch fuel/wasted spark on 2 cylinders at a time with 6/8/12 cylinders. Supports staged injection, has auxilory inputs and outputs, rpm switches, electric fan switch, and the system is adaptable to a lot of engines easily. Can even use a stock 280zx turbo distributor with the stock trigger wheel, or they can supply a crank trigger system for you.

http://www.wolfems.com/ for the US site and http://www.wolfems.com.au/ for the OZ site. I have the system installed on my toyota 7m-gte engine, and Pete Sanders has the system on his L28ET. It will drive many types of injectors, I have a set of 550cc/min Rx7 injectors in my setup.

The AEM computer is NOT, repeat NOT the Wolf system. Think GEMs or Motec. Won't get into it now but suffice it to say that the new EMS is a great deal more sophisticated and is a good competitor to the Motec units. Datalogging and spare I/Os abound. Race unit is not yet available but is coming. Supra, Honda, and RX7 units are released. Goto www.aempower.com/bbs to learn more or shoot me some mail and I'll answer your questions...

Had some more time to post - am on travel out of town. Anyway, the new box is 100% new and appears to be something they are closely working with GEMS on and are using their software to configure it. On my particular unit I've got about 10 spare I/Os after the EFI was all wired up. I'm logging EGT (I can log 4 EGT) and will soon be logging fuel pressure too. I'm considering oil pressure and oil temp as well but am not sure I want to start tapping engine fittings on this car ;) That is all in addition to the other standard things you get with any EMS including MPH off of a speed sensor. This is in a Supra BTW but the PnP units will use the same hardware just different connectors. The EMS isn't tied to any particular set of sensors and is VERY flexible. DL their software and check it out - I can give you some logs from my car to look at if you want. I'm currently beta testing their Automapping with my W/B and am finding that it works pretty well. Out of all of the systems out there right now I think the AEM kicks their butt with the possible exception of the Motec stuff which I've never experienced. When their "race" unit comes out (same hardware) I expect to put it in my Z along with a W/B or two. No sense learning yet another system ;) For lower cost setups look closely at the Holley Commander stuff, it's much simpler IMO but VERY capable...

I think everyone should take alook at the Wolf 3D system before they make a decision on an EMS. I've been running one for three years now and I am totally satisfied with the quality, performance, and features. It's all got all the data logging capabilities, including min/max logging, and O2 logging for each map point. It also has real time displays for O2, RPM, load, and injecotr duty cycle. Everything you can modify, it logs.

I think the Wolf3D system fits in universal applications the best. I think the only engine it can't control is a Harley engine. It'll run a Briggs and Stratton if you want it to, that's how flexible it is. Mine will run up to eight injectors, but I think the new V4.0 unit will run up to 12 injectors.

Those Aussies know how to make engine management (they make the Motec and Haltec too).

A few specs on the new AEM unit:

10 injector drivers (not P/H but can be done with a resistor pack).

Individual cylinder fueling - full sequential, staged, batch, etc..

5 coil drivers - 10cyl capable with waste fire.

Dual O2 inputs - W/B

Dual knock sensors

4EGT inputs capable of modifying fuel curve

Boost control

N2O control

VTEC capable or dual fuel map

FULL datalogging of all I/Os including a TON of spare I/Os.

I'm logging EGT, speed (MPH), Knock, spark, fuel (Automapped), A/F, air temp, and a bunch more. I will be logging Oil pressure and Fuel pressure soon. Probably do oil temp too while I'm at it along with air temp into and out of the turbo (doing after intercooler now). a friend and I may build a G-sensor too! smile.gif Think Motec without the price tag. Datalogging speed is FAST and it has internal memory that loops so I get the last 20mins whenever I want it for a select number of items. They're working on traction control and will be releasing boost and fuel automapping this month (I'm a beta tester).

Downside is this is a complicated unit and they don't have a universal unit YET. The reason for that is that it's not all documented yet - there's SO much to document  You'll also have to have a laptop to really tune it,no handheld deal for this sucker. Kripes, the log software even has a math library in it! hail.gif

Anyway, you get the idea. Not everyone needs this much capability but WOW is it fun to play with. All of the spare inputs and outputs are terrific too. Fun stuff to play with for sure but not everyone's cup of tea....

Sounds like some more features that the Wolf3d 4.0 doesn't have, but the Wolf3D is worth mentioning. The fact that it is user friendly, and very flexable are things that could easily make others bite on it.

The new stuff from AEM sounds great, and I myself being a data-ologist, jr electronic engineer, and computer programmer could really apreciate some of that stuff. Would it really make my car run any better than my current setup, probably not for my application, but would it be fun, sure I bet.

Anyways, if you can give us the inside scoop when new things come up that'd be awesome.

BLKMGK, Just looking through some of the threads that are a few weeks old and saw this, any idea what the projected cost of the AEM race unit will be when it does come out?

I'm a ways away from buying it but if it's price competetive with a Haltech E6k or an Electromotive TEC-III, I think I'd jump all over the AEM one. Sounds like a great little box all in all. Buy it now for the L28ET going into the 240, keep it for the RB26DETT I someday hope to buy for the 240.

as a vendor for aem, i know the race system isnt due out untill next year. and no plans right now for any nissan plug and play systems. they are nice, but the haltech e6k or motec do more. and when you open the aem box for the ems, theres a piece of paper that says once the protection sticker that covers the plugs on the ems is removed, there is no warranty.

i was going to put one in my 90TT but not now, haltech gets our support in ohio.
