Miles
Our 350 sbc surges. It has a new Edlebrock carb. It's not like a hicup. More like it speeds up slightly then slows down so it feels like a pulse. It is most noticable when holding constant speed in first and second, but can be felt in all gears. Initial throttle reponse is slightly slow once the engine is warmed up. Fuel pressure runs about 3psi average. I was thinking it might be fuel pressure related, but when I floor it hard it really takes off without any hesitation. It does not seem to be starving for fuel. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Miles
pparaska
Sounds like a typical lean surge. Have you tried changing the rods/jets/etc?
Guest Anonymous
Surging problem: I agree. It may be a lean surge condition. Carter has assortment of rods and jets for your AFB carb. Note what jets and rods you start with then slowly to either smaller rod or bigger jet. If the problem occurs only at cruising speed and no load, this should solve your problem. If it occurs when under load, then you should play with the power piston springs. Using a hand vacuum pump will make it easier. If you still can't get it right, you can install air fuel meter and make adjustments accurately. This will also allow you to get maximin fuel mileage. Miles
Fixed the lean surge problem. Changed out the Edelbrock metering rods one step in the rich direction and it accelerates fast and smooth. Although at idle the engine speeds up and slows down slightly now. Thanks Miles

In all the years that I've built street small block motors, my fuel pressure always was between 5 to 6 lbs.The fuel pressure for the stock inline six was 3 to 4 lbs. Try increasing line pressure to 5 lbs. Most 4 barrels carbs took around 6 pounds before they needed a regulator.Hope this helps. ROD
