I changed the alternator this weekend, and it's still not running. There's power coming from the alternator, though. Makes me think I have something grounded somewhere, but I don't know. The car will stay running if there are jumper cables hooked up to the battery, but it idles at about 2100rpm. I left the cables on for like 5 minutes, and then disconnected them. The car stayed running for about 30 secs, then dropped to 500rpm for about 10 secs and then stalled. I have no idea what's wrong.. Anyone have any guesses?

Make sure you have good battery cables and no corroded terminals. Especially the ground. Sometimes cables will corrode inside the insulation and you can't see the damage. I build my own cables with copper ends and welding cable. Also make sure that the battery and the engine block are both grounded to the chassis. 99% of electrical troubles can be traced to bad grounds.

First, Dude, that sux. what are you running? (fuel injection, carbs, what block? etc) Check all your connections from battery on. Can you borrow a battery that you know is working and try that? If that fixes it, new battery ugg.gif . Otherwise i'd suggest getting a voltimeter from radioshack w/ a wireless clip. (I picked up a combo one for like 15$) You need the wireless clip to measure voltage in wires that you cant splice from both ends. Check all body electrical from the battery. If you dont have a wiring schematic, get one. Not shure if they are in Haynes or Chilton, but i know they are in the original shop manuals. If you have a 280z, i can get you a shematic for that. 2thumbs.gif

I did try a charged battery that I know works, I pulled it out of the 5.0 mustang. I'm thinking it's a ground somewhere, and I really, REALLY don't want to go looking for it. :/ I might just take it into a shop.

And to whom ever asked... I have a 1980 280zx n/a .. Everything stock to my knowledge.

When I get frustrated on an electrical problem that I can't solve, I take the problem to a specialist elecrtical shop locally that I know has a good reputation and they have always been able to correct the problem under $30.00 and fast too. Check around and try to find a good electrical speciality shop. Sometimes a problem can nickle and dime you to death and never go away. I hate to admit it but I have been known to get an electrical repair done at a shop on occasion. There are probably lot of members who could fix the problem and they are over there and you are over here in cyberspace.

Ok so I was talking to someone else that has an 80 280zx, only difference is his is a 2+2. He was talking to me about my electrical problem and in conversation he mentioned his battery cables. He's got a split cable going to his negative post .. I have a split cable too, only it's currently going to my positive. Do all 280zx's have the split cable, and does it allways go to the negative? I swear .. if those mechanics put my negative cable on my positive post.. rrrr. twak.gif

Can anyone confirm this?

Jade,

Good to see that you're here. I wish you didn't live all the way on the other side of town, otherwise I'd be able to help you a little more.

Given from what I gathered about the shop that patched your Z together, I'm skeptical about anything that did.

Just kidding. I really hope we can get your problem figured out for you so that you can keep the HOA Nazis off your back.

HAHA! Right on! I should have guessed it with the remarks made on the DZA board.

While I'm waiting for someone else to respond ... Do you know of any place 'round my side of town I can take my car to for electrical probs? I reaaaaaaaally don't look forward to finding it myself...
