Guest thepenguin99
I recently purchased a rust free 72 240z in excellent cosmetic condition (UNCRACKED DASH!!!) for a LT1 swap. For the LT1 I am planning on hunting down a wrecked 94-95 camaro/firebird with a t56 at the local salvage/insurance auctions. Gotta love a dealers license =). The archives yielded some conflicting information on some points which is what I need help with. Does the stock balancer hit the crossmember with the JTR conversion? I read some posts saying no while others said yes. If yes, what balancer would you recommend I go with? I think buying the corvette balancer would probably be more expensive than aftermarket but i'm not sure. Why the 94-95 lt1? There were a few posts that said this was the engine to use because of the OBD1 computer. What is wrong with using the later OBD2 computer? Also, can I use the later optispark with the OBD1 computer? Will the standard 84-86 camaro and taurus fan be enough to cool this engine? I read some posts saying go griffin and others saying this would be fine. Using the older parts would be optimal for my budget considering I aquired them for free =). Thx in advance, Nathan Albright 71 240z 72 240z
Guest Your Car is Slow
Ill be doing an LT1 swap in my 240Z soon here as well. Already have the LT1...just need the T56 Mine is a 93 (speed density) and also OBDI...the reason you dont wanna go OBDII is that computer is designed more for emissions restrictions (catalytic converters, etc)
Tim240z
I'm using the LT1 (94 Z28). the stock balancer clears in the JTR position. OBD1 units are cheaper to get edited (buy software and cable). This may have changed recently. I am using TunerCat software to edit my PCM. Go to AKM electronics website and read about what;s up. Andrew sells the cable which works for either TunerCat or LT1 Edit. Tim
Mike C
If you go with the 95 you get the updated Optispark, possibly saving you another expense down the road. If you have to buy a radiator, I would buy the Griffin. If you get a Camaro radiator virtually cost free, might as well try it. Obvioulsy the 95 donor car fan is where I would start. The grill opening in the Z is bigger than the F bodies, so fan SHOULD be sufficient if you can get it adapted to the most likely narrower radiator. Here is a page on T56 gear ratios. There appears to be at least 3 different common ones, so that may be something you investigate further. http://www.xse.com/leres/ss/calculator.html
80LS1T
I am also using a 93 LT1 (Speed Density). I am upgrading to the 95+ Optispark unit, so yes you can using it with the OBDI computers. You have to get the 95-97 Optispark, 95-97 timing cover, and new electical harness for Optispark. It is a pretty straight forward swap. If I were you I would look for a 95 LT1. That way you get the updated Optispark and your still OBDI! Best of both worlds. I would have done this but I didn't do my homework before I bought my engine. Although some people say that Speed Density is easier to modify??? I personally have no idea??? Guy
Guest Your Car is Slow
Not any easier to modify..just easier to tune...dont have to worry about that stupid MAF as a large restriction in your intake
Tim240z
Not any easier to modify..just easier to tune...dont have to worry about that stupid MAF as a large restriction in your intake The MAF engines can just be defaulted to speed density, so that statement doesn't really apply. Guest thepenguin99
I just checked out the gear ratio calculator. Why does everyone push the 94-97 t56? It seems like the 93 t56 has a much more friendly end gear ratio. I put in the ratios for the 93 t56 with a 4.11 rear and you would only be at ~2k rpm while cruising 60mph. My plan was a 3.7lsd and the 94-97 tranny but damn I would be running some low rpms (~1500rpm@60mph). Nathan 71 240z 72 240z
Guest DRK
I believe the 94-97 6th gear has a little more overdrive than the 93 model. Also believe the 94-97 has a higher torque rating. DK
