Guest CarGuyChuck
I have a '79 280ZX, and have found a Turbo engine for pretty cheap. I was wondering if a twin turbo setup would be possible, and if not, is the turbo pretty much a direct swap for the engine in my car now? Mudge
Its always possible, but you'd have to fab up your own custom headers, intercooling would be a pain, basically you'd be broke paying someone else to figure things out, or your going to spend some time making it that way yourself. Other than that, since your car is FI the engine would drop in pretty easily, and you wont have as much "fun" with the wiring as I am Now turbo only, is arguable, you can do it but your pistons aren't as strong as the turbo engines. Lockjaw
James has a twin turbo set-up and I am sure he likes it, but from the standpoint of simplicity, I would just run one turbo. You can swap the engines, they bolt up the same, but you would need to swap over the turbo EFI and that is not quite as simple. Its not to hard, just not simple. David K
I have a '79 280ZX, and have found a Turbo engine for pretty cheap. I was wondering if a twin turbo setup would be possible, and if not, is the turbo pretty much a direct swap for the engine in my car now? If you have to ask this question, then i feel that a drop in l28et would be better for you to start out with.
Guest De Schmaydee
.......there's really no advantage to having 2 turbos on a straight 6 engine........the twin turbos are usually on cars w/"V" engines..... ....the turbo motor should go in w/o a lot of probs.....but you need a whole lot more than just the motor.......i would recommend getting a whole turbo parts car......and doing a whole lot of research before beginning......there's a lot of info on it......its not that hard if you've done your homework beforehand....if you havent it can be very rough..........s

Yokohama
At the least you just need the L28ET and ECCS system (harness, ECU, etc.). Depending on what you do, there will be things that came in the ZXT that you may or may not need. I would look at what others have done and copy a setup you like (and that was working with no real problems). The stock early version 5-speed will hold mild turbo system, but you can upgrade to the later "B-version" if you break yours. You can also fit the T5 from a ZXT or get the Mustang unit and combine it with a T5 input shaft and bell housing from the ZXT. If you are automatic, I would tell you to get the transmission from a Z31 Turbo (has overdrive). Most people I know are converting from twin to single in Mk4 Supra and GT-R. I would say the twin-turbo systems have fallen out of favor. You can use the R200 and CV-shafts from the ZXT if you want to. However, unless you want big power, you don't have to.
