Guest Anonymous
Ok, well i picked up a motor from a local salvage yard and the fellow told me it was a 350. I took it home stripped it down to the block and found a number.....305 passengers side behind the cylinders opposite of the cast number which is 381979 if im not mistaken. The bore is slightly under 4". So, im pretty sure this 350 is a 305. Now, im decinding to trek on and not let this stand in my way from dropping a v8 into a datsun Z. Now the question of the hour is, how much displacement can i get out of a 305? keep in mind im not looking to pull wheel standers here. Just a reliable ride with about 350 horses. Thanks for reading this. Patrick
denny411
Since the engine was misrepresented,I would take it back.He shouldn`t have a problem with an even exchange for a 350 (if he`s honest). You might have to reassemble it though, but I would ask first
Guest greimann
The casting number you refer to is probably 361979. That block was used from 75- 77 for 305's. You should take that motor right back to where you got it ASAP and get a 350 or your money back. Don't settle for the 305, you will kick yourself forever. 305's are wimps. Once you build the car, you WILL want the full potential that a 350 has to offer.
Georgia Flash
I haven't got my 350 yet and was pondering how to go about it. Crate motor, salvage yard, donner car, etc... I was wondering what to look for in the salvage yards so I don't have this same problem ie. getting a 305 instead of a 350. Are there any signs to look for when getting the engine to make sure it is a 350 and not something else? And yes like the other guys said if the salvage yard worker/owner misrepresented this thing as the real deal he would definately have to take it back! Guest greimann
There are books that have casting numbers, but I just found this site that seems fairly comprehensive. Print it out and take it with you. http://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm
Mike C
If you paid for a 350, get your 350. Actually, a 305 would make a pretty decent motor for a Z IMO. I have a friend who did the first TPI swap I ever saw. It was an '86 TPI 305 in his '74 Corvette convertible. 3600lbs. With the GM computer, and SLP cam, headers and an Edelbrock TPI base, it ran 13.97 in Houston. It ran real consistent 14.20s usually, and with 1200# less in a Z, it should run 12.60s or so. BUT, if you paid for a 350, go get it. I bought a TBI 305 and T5 for my 240 but I've changed my mind AGAIN and will run a 10.5:1 L28 with E88 head and triple Del'Lortos I got from a buddy
