What Do These Turbo Parts Do Exactly???

I have been doing a little research about Turbos and am confused about a few parts and terminology. What do the following parts do exactly:

Airflow meter

Down pipe

J-pipe

This is all concerning adding a turbo upgrade kit to the stock 280Z engine.

Thanks alot for any help you can offer.

Airflow meter is the device that goes in front of the turbo on the inlet that measures airflow, and tells the ecu how much air the engine is ingesting based upon a little circuit board in there that has a sliding contact.

The downpipe comes off the back of the turbine housing and connects the exhaust system to the turbo.

The J pipe is the pipe on a factory nissan turbo ZX that connects the compressor discharge from the turbo to the throttle body.

Got it. :?:

Then what about the normal exhaust manifolds? Do they feed the exhaust to the turbo which then pushes it out through the turbo exhaust?

Thanks again.

Exactly. That's how you would add a turbo a non-turbo car, and you didn't have a stock turbo manifold.

Actually exhaust is pushed out by the pistons in the engine, if you want to get techy about it. It is pushed out thru the turbine housing, over/around the turbine wheel, which drives the compressor wheel, and makes boost.

Corky Bells book "Maximum Boost" would be a good read for you. I have read it, and it has a lot of info in it.
