Guest Anonymous
I bought my 83 280ZX n/a about 2 months ago. I had to drive it from Alabama to my home in Dallas. After lots of work to get it ready for inspected, I finally got it inspected, tagged, and titled. Here's the deal...I think the shop that repaired my Z managed to break something in the process. One of the things I wanted them to fix was the fact that the circular dash gauges for your battery and oil pressure were out, lights and all. Also, I had a major power steering fluid leak, so I had that unhooked. So we replaced the rack and some other components I am unaware of. I do remember the fellow who worked on my car saying that there was a circuit board like in the dash or the steering column that had a couple of capacitors or circuits or something that had come loose, which he just re-soldered into place. My instinct would lead me to believe that this might be the problem, although I don't know for sure. Anyway, since I have gotten the car back, there have been multiple times that my digital dash and all gauges, including my CD player just die completely. No power, no lights, nothing. But the car will still be running and after about 15 seconds or so everything will light up again. Also another separate issue is from time to time the turn signal will blink rapidly, like at least two times faster than normal when I use my turn signal. This never happened when I drove the car some 1000 miles from Pensacola to Mobile to Baton Rouge to Shreveport to Dallas and then drove around in town until I could get it in for repairs. So this leads me to believe that this guy either did something to cause it, or fixed something that allowed this problem to surface. I cannot get any answers from this mechanic, but that's a whole other story altogether. Has anyone out there ever had this type of problem or have any type of suggestion of where to look or where to take it in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex. I am just learning about Z's and their workings, so I would prefer to find someone who can fix this for me, until I learn more about the workings of these great vehicles. Thanks!!! Sorry for the long post, but I figured these details were pertinent in trying to diagnose this issue. Thanks again fellows!!! YosHi8976 Too little time, too many Z's!! Guest De Schmaydee
dont really know how to fix that, but what about just getting a replacement cluster...sounds like a loose plug but it could be whatever components were put back on heat up and fail.....a new (used) cluster would eliminate a bunch of the variables. ....s
JoeinCA
I say... Take it to a real good automotive electrical shop. They will fix the problem, faster and cheaper than you can by aiming your wallet. jut my opinion though... after having aimed the wallet at a charging problem (new alt, volt reg, battery, fuse block, etc.) until it was very light. Took it to a good electrician, and they found and solved the charging problem. Electrical gadgets are only fun until it you have to fix them. Joe. JasonE
Usually when the blinkers blink twice as fast it is because a bulb has gone out or they are not making a good connection. I would suggest checking all the bulbs. As for the dash lights I would go through all the connections and make sure they are clean and secure. After having some crazy electrical gremlins in my ZX all I can say is check everything over with a fine tooth comb. People love to butcher electrical systems; especially when it comes to installing an aftermarket radio.
Guest Anonymous
Thanks for all your help guys, I think I have finally got it figured out. Well, at least I have all the parts I need. I just need to start swapping out some parts and checking some connections I cannot easily get to. Thanks again!!

Guest Anonymous
Yep, that's who I bought it from. Amazingly enough, I could not locate one here that I was worth putting any cash into. I take it that you are friends with him??? Do you have any history on this car? I now have it up for sale, because my mom's Multiple Sclerosis has taken a major turn for the worse and I cannot spend the time or the money to do what I wanted to with it. I have replaced the tires with Potenza RE950s, replaced the steering rack, and I have a whole gripload of parts I bought for it. Crane high perf. ignition coil, NGK plugs, Taylor Pro 8MM spark plug wires, new distributor cap and rotor, HID headlights, JSK fuel line, 60MM throttlebody with JSK machined spacer, and a cold air intake. Also, have a lot of spare used parts like those containers behind the seats where he put speakers, so I can return that part to stock. I got the electrical part worked out, and I wanted to do a turbo swap or put an RB26DETT or RB25DET in it, but since my mom is in such bad shape I cannot devote the time to it and I hate to just let it sit. Let me know if you know anyone that wants to buy it. Thanks!!!
pallnet
i know the car very well. a handfull of my tools have graced that engine bay. i installed a flow tested and cleand set of injectors from my private stock, on that car when gabe came over before you bought it. very clean car with no problems (after he left my garage) i even went over to his house and installed a headgasket and manafold studs. again, from my private stock. that car took second to only his wife and little girl. it's really hard to see that you are having these kinds of problems with such a well cared for car. i hope you get these things worked out cause that car does not belong parked for any reason. good luck.. pallnet
