Guest Hotwhlz
work on my stock 82 280ZX? I've read where it will work with my dizzy when installed on a carb'd Z. But nowhere can I find if it will work with my EFI'd Z. My ignition module has taken a dump and I need to replace it. I've read that the GM is a good substitute for around $20 vs. Nissan wanting $300+ for theirs. Thanks for the help guys. Ron

Guest Hotwhlz
Thanks for the reply. I went to zcar.com but can't find any parts listed for sale other than personal classified ads. Does zcar.com have their own parts for sale and if so.......where is the link? I've probably overlooked it a few dozen times but I just don't see the link for them. Dave
This is for the first generation Z but I think it could be what you are looking for. http://www.zhome.com/ZCMnL/tech/gmhei.html
Guest Tyguy280zx
actually the HEI module will work on EFI engines. I have one installed on an '80 280zx (n/a) and it revs all the way up to redline no problem. here are some links you all can check out. http://dimequarterly.tierranet.com/articles/tech_hei.html (best) or http://www.sonic.net/~kyle/hei.html
Drax240z
I have a GM HEI module on my 260z with a 76 dizzy... should work just fine on a NA 280zx as well. There are theories that it doesn't provide quite a good spark signal at high RPM however... I've yet to see this proven or disproven. Guest Hotwhlz
Great info, thanks for the replies. I do have one other question though. The stock ignition module has the place to plug the distributor pickup leads into, a place to plug the wires going to the coil, AND a place on the side near the bottom to plug in something that looks the same as the injector wiring. If I've read right, this connection is for the electronic advance. What do I do about this connection since the GM HEI module has no provision for it? Again, thanks for all the input. 280zwitha383
(Bump) Wondering if anyone has come to a conclusion about this. I've been through a handful of ignition modules myself and I would love to convert it over to the 4 pin GM HEI module. My module doesn't have the connection on the side for the advance but I've had some '82's that do and this would be valuable IMO if someone has done this. JMortensen
I think the other port allows the computer to retard the timing, but if you don't have it hooked up to the ECU, the timing will be retarded. The 82 NA distributor has 17 degrees of mechanical advance in it from the factory. Z engines generally like somewhere between 32 and 38 degrees total advance. So run it at ~18 at idle, disconnect the vacuum advance, and run a stock module or the HEI and you should be good to go.
