Phantom
Went through my first tank of gas and averaged 16.5 mpg. Considering the "rides" I have been giving and that I really can't use 6th right now I'm not too upset. I figure once 6th becomes an option and I behave myself a bit I can probalby boost that up to around 20 for the routine commute to and from work. Time will tell. Guest Anonymous
First, let me say the LS1 looks awesome in your car! Very nice job! I finally got to see the pics! Some day I plan to do the LS1 in my car but for now the L28 will have to do. I have too many other projects. I installed a T56 in my 73 Camaro and with a carbed engine I managed 25 mpg and I havent even finished the break-in on the engine! I was totally surprised! So I would think in a lighter car... The T56 is an awesome tranny! Thanks for keeping everyone posted on your Z. This website is great!
fl327
take that car to the track!
Phantom
Results from second tank of gas are more impressive. Still not using 6th much but only using thelead foot when I had a good reason and fuel economy went up to 19.7 MPG. Just another confirmation that fuel economy and the foot are directly proportional - when one goes down so does the other.
fastzcars
Hay Phantom. That is one Sweet, Clean, Install. And it's nice to know that the milage isn't to bad either. I olny wish I could see it in person. Keep the post's comin.
Guest zfan
That's awsome mileage..I only wish I could say the same! Mike
Savage42
Where are the pics of the engine? Am I missing something? Scratch that....I know I'm missing something and I want to see. Help!

(as long as you don't do too many of those 80-120 bursts) The built 350 (just under 400HP) in my Z w/ 700R4 got 28 mpg on a drive from Oregon to Las Vegas and back. I guess that's what compression and a healthy cam get you. Can't complain too much about that. Guess I just need to get the whole motor, trans, mounts, headers, whole setup ready to bolt into another Z ready to sell so I can go with the LS1. I know, it'll have less HP, but a bit more "driveable". I'm new to the list. Is there a place to post that setup once I get it ready to move? With 10k miles on the setup, it would be great from someone wanting a more radical setup.
Phantom
Well - third tank gave me 17.8 MPG. That included several full thottle "demo runs" so I don't feel so badly. Hey - I pulled up next to a WS-6 Firebird when I was fueling up and noticed the driver was filling up with 87 octane. Am I wasting my money buying the 93 octane stuff? Tim240z
The PCM will compensate for low octane and retard the timing accordingly. Give your baby the good stuff! You could always drop in some Toluene, or a touch of nitromethane to sweeten it up a little! Tim
Phantom
Mothballs work quite well actually - if you get the old fashioned kind.

They haven't made the "old fashioned" kind for years now!....a trip to auto paint supply store will do the trick...
Guest the_dj
Are you guys serious about the additives? I've never heard of LS1 owners adding stuff to their 93.
Phantom
Depends. Booster would be fine if only 87 octane available and a little more performance needed - or running a high comp engine and getting borderline with pre-ignition. Guys used to do it all the time but not too much any more with the advent of the new fuel injections systems. Hey - you know - I charge a usage fee for those quoting me. At least you gave me credit so I can flunk you for plagarism!!!!
Guest Potent68
The LS1's don't mind a little octane boost every other tank at the MOST. Always run premium. The WS6 owner you saw wasn't very car literate probably. Occasionally if I'm going to the track, I'll swing in for some race gas, but only a few gallons, and if I try to run it on back to back tanks, she get's cranky. The O2 sensors set a check engine light off and on, till I've run enough premium, (non racegas) through it to clean it out. Tom
Guest the_dj
It's a good quote. I get reminded of it every day! I'm going to be running a methanol injection system in the short future, but that's due to boost, not just a stock motor. 93 octane is much better than 87 w/ additive Sam
Sumo
I've know some kids driving LS-1 camaro and T/A filling up with 87 octane and later complain that the car seemed weak. I told them "what do you expect the computer is compensating for the lower octane. The lower the octane, less horsepower" I told them that if you just wanna drive it everyday to work it's fine but if you have a heavy foot then good stuff gonna have to be put in. They always give this look after i tell them this
Guest Nic-Rebel450CA
Am I wasting my money buying the 93 octane stuff? Basically, Yes.. Octane does not give you more power. I dont know how many times I have heard ppl putting higher octane gas in their car like it is supposed to make it more powerful. Not to mention the countless times I have heard of newer cars failing smog when they use "premium gas" and end up with all kinds of deposits and crap from incomplete burn. Octane is for a resistance to burning. You want to use the lowest octane possible in your engine. Higher octane is for engines that need it because they will ping (pre-detinate) because the compression is too high (whether it is a hi-comp engine, turbo'd, blown, or supercharged). 80LS1T
Actually higher octane in an engine that is supposed to have higher octane does make more power. I will agree with you when you say that putting higher octane in a car that only requires 87 wont do a damn thing! I think its funny when people tell me that they put "the good stuff" in an their car really hauls ass now! I am going to use the highest octane possible(93) in my car but thats because I have 10.9:1 compression! Guy
