is there an engine out there that displaces the same as the 350 but without the need for new motor mounts? im trying not to go into turbos or supercharger, had bad luck with them in past, but im trying to figure out what would be the best engine for a 240z

if your not willing to do something simple like fabricate motor mounts, a part that you can buy already made from JTR or make with already diagrams available for them and use an engine that been used hundreds of time what are you going to do when you need harder to make parts like a trans cross member or exhaust system

nono i think you guys got me wrong, im more than willing to do the extra work, but my friend said the were engines out there that you could bolt in, i like the idea of making new mounts, lets me learn more, and it'll be more fun, but ye

i am the son of lazybum's "friend". my father believes that the Chevy 289 will mount directly to the stock 240z motor mounts. i keep telling him that he is wrong and no matter how many times i say this he keeps telling me that the 289 will bolt directly to those mounts. i do not believe him and dont believe that any chevy small block will bolt to the stock 240 mounts. he also says that buying or fabricating motor mounts is a very expensive and difficult job. i do not believe this, but he insists that it is.

 

a couple questoins..

 

1) how much do the chevy small block motor mounts from JTR run for?

2) is there any engine (other than the stock Z motor) that will bolt to the original z motor mounts?

3) what is the difficulty level on the motor mount installatoin (dont think its that hard or expensive)

Just buy the JTR book first. THEN ask questions. The JTR mounts DO bolt to the stock Nissan motor mounts. They use adapter plates that then bolt to the Chevy motor and mounts. You have to fab a new crossmember for the transmission mount however. Chevy never made a 289 but a 283. The 289 was the boys in Dearborn.

 

BUY THE BOOK! BUY THE BOOK! BUY THE BOOK! BUY THE BOOK! If you are serious about this, the book is very straghtforward for a reasonably skilled mechanic. All of the fabrication is explained and detailed AND they have a price list. Actually, it's probably on their website as well.

Even if the 289 (supposedly) bolts straight in, the engine will be too far forward and the weight distribution will increased at the front of the car. If you are going to do this conversion and want the car to be a good handler then do it right the first time. The JTR manual should be your bible.

Dont listen to people that think they know, do what I did and buy the manual , stay close to this forum and you cant go wrong.

I'd have to say that fabricating engine mounts has been the least stressful part of my conversion so far. Anyone with access to cutting and welding equipment can turn out a set of mounts in about 4 or 5 hours (mine use welded pipe spacers instead of the aluminum ones used by JTR). As far as other engines that might bolt right in..... The Jag V-12 mounts are REALLY close to the stock datsun mounting points, but this would put the engine pretty far forward, and it weighs considerably more than a small block chevy. It also will not ever be able to put out as much power as the chevy per doller invested. You'll probably need a custom hood to clear the cam covers as well, because the engine is taller than it is wide. Stick with the Chevy and you really cant go wrong. No other engine is available in so many displacements while still maintaining the same external dimensions. No other engine has the parts interchange ability of the chevy, and the only engine that comes close to having the aftermarket support is the small block ford. Unless you are hell bent on making an original and unique hybrid, the chevy is probably the best way to go. (Flame away, Ford and Mopar guys) Just my 2 cents worth.

ye i think ill stick with the chevy, thx for your cents it was a good 2 cents, anyways ive got a while to search and locate everything soo ye right now im just investigating all possiblities

ive got the greatest idea ever, put my yz125 engine in the 240z... now that wouldnt go fast AT ALL ha ha, but it would be interesting to see if i could do it

At the risk of getting stubborn angry replies from him, I just sent a few pics showing the required set back plates, and how they look installed on the car. They will only work with the motor mounts specified in the JTR manual, which are the mounts used in 50's through 70's chevy pickups. I got mine at Pep Boys for $9.00 each. Hope this helps you win the argument. :D
