Tim240z
I passed great on the 25mph test, but failed NOx miserably on the 15mph test (almost double the max allowable). HC and CO were fine. My idea was maybe CAT was bad, but it was replaced in '99! Could it be that the O2 sensors are getting 'lazy'? Any ideas. Is there some 'juice' that I can add to get me passed. Thanks, Tim
Guest Anonymous
Is the engine purely stock (ie cam, injectors, ECM, MAP, etc..)? I don't think there is any "juice" that will miraculously help you pass emissions tests. But I sure wish there was! O2 sensors can cause lotza problems with emissions crap, but so can alot of other things.
mas28O
Tim I Took my Supercharged Acura Gsr to the smog last week and did not pass, not even close. I then whent down to Kragen and bought some Pass emisions bottle, I put 1/2 the bottle in the tank and put the other 1/2 in the engine using a vacuum line. The next day I passed without any problem. You might want to try it. Mike

Guest greimann
High NOx is due to high combustion temperatures. This is most often caused by a faulty EGR valve but can also be caused by high compression, ignition timing too far advanced, mixture too lean, low octane fuel, or combustion deposits that create hot spots. It could also be partly due to the catalyst, but since it is new and the HC is OK, I think you can rule that out. Here is what I would do: 1. Make sure your EGR is functioning by verifying that the diaphragm is moving when you snap the throttle open. Also verify that the passages in the EGR system are not clogged by carbon deposits. 2. Run a tank of fuel injector cleaner or similar to get the deposits out. 3. Change the plugs, if they are old and crusty. 4. Get some denatured alcohol from the hardware store and create a 10% mixture of that and high octane gas in your tank. 5. Crank your ignition timing back to the low end of the specification. 6. Make sure that the heated air flapper valve (if you have one) that helps cold start, is closed and the motor is sucking cold air. 7. If you want to spend the $, change the O2 sensor. If not, change it if all of the above does not work!
David K
Tim is this the Camaro? Do what Dave said, and also give it a good run on the hwy with a couple of power bursts before you go to smog (floor it). Dont let it idle before smog test, that will always clog stuff up! My IROC was having trouble passing, so i went out for an hour and ran it hard, punching the throttle, and came back to the smog place. I passed like it was a new car. BTW my Z passed with flying colors today.
mas28O
Tim I used a vacuum line to suck the fluid into the intake. Dealers do this all the time to clean the motor. mike
David K
Tim I used a vacuum line to suck the fluid into the intake. Dealers do this all the time to clean the motor. mike Thats a different, more expensive kit. RIght out of high school i got a job at Econo Lube. i used to do FI system cleaning all day. Theres a bottle of cleaner that you elevate like an IV bag, and it slowly drips through a regulator into the air intake. You have to pull a hose and plug it, then put the cleaner hose in place. It will smoke BAD for about 10-15 minutes after the cleaning. This is the best way to clean your injectors without removing them. The cleaner they are talking about is the bottle you put in the gas tank.
Tim240z
Well...tested again today and it passed way low! N.O. went from 1133ppm to 30ppm. The alcohol in the tank and 'driving it clean' (aka driving like I stole it). whoo hoo!! Tim
David K
Ever notice cars run better when you run the pee out of them? Whenever i drive my car 'normal', it starts having problems and running bad. Then i drive it hard, and no more problems.
Guest BigWhyteDude
i was told that higher compression engines need to be driven like it was stolen every once and a while. MY auto tech teacher said his wifes car a 69 cuda i think with a 440 i belive he said would get all clogged up when she drove it like a little old lady. He said she would tell him when it was doing it and he would take her keys and take the car out to the country roads around here and run it flat out for a while. When he brought it back home it would run like a champ again. I guess us people in Georgia are lucky we dont have smog nazis here.

Mudge
The cleaner they are talking about is the bottle you put in the gas tank. GM TopEnd cleaner, SeaFoam, there are many - in the gas, oil, or sucked into the engine via vacuum lines.
