ToplessZ
Ok just got a free running 305. I know its not a 350 but Im going to build one as I can afford it for now. I am wanting mild performance out of it probably 300 hp to the wheels or close to it. I want to know what 350 parts I can use and how can I get those numbers on a very tight budget. Open to suggestions especially on heads and cams. Need lots of input. Thanks a ton guys. Also thinking about running a 75 shot of juice if that changes anything but dont want to include that in the 300 hp.
ToplessZ
Sorry forgot to add that this is from a 1985 custom deluxe truck if that makes any difference. Thanks
Guest Anonymous
Jared, if that 305 is a good running motor without oil consumption, slap it in there and get the car running.if not do a regular rebuild on it . You can add parts like carb and manifold as time goes by but wait for a 350 that you can really build. I would like a 383 but I got a 350 budget. Mike C
Northern Auto Parts (.com) may be able to help you out with a performance rebuild kit. I know they have them for the 350 and they are cheap. With hyperuetectic pistons it's only $295 with pistons, rings, bearings, gaskets, timing chain, cam and lifters. If you piece it together yourself, the Crane Powermax cams designed for a TPI 305 should work well.
ToplessZ
Still want to know can I use regular 350 heads perhaps ones with smaller cc's 58 maybe like the aluminum vette heads Engine runs and I dont think it burns any oil but it has 140,000 miles on it and that rusty carb sitting on top of it is definately not going to go into my z. I want to spend about 800 bucks on the engine maybe a grand. Then Im going to slowly but surely peice together my 350 or 383. I dont have any money to build up the car right now and I dont want to be blowing u joints and driveshafts like some of the posts ive read. I figure with the 305 I wont have to worry about that quite as much. Does anyone have any contact info for the above mentioned company that price seems really good. So will a 350 intake and carb work on the 305 I want to swap the parts onto my new engine when I build it. Thanks for all the input.

Mike C
The 58cc 'vette heads will work fine. It uses the same intake as pre '87 small block I believe. BUT if you are planning on building another motor anyhow, I wouldn't spend a dime on the 305. Just drive it 'til it blows up and then swap in your new motor. The 58cc 'vette heads will be too small for another motor IMO and you'll have to buy ANOTHER set of heads which means you could spend twice as much on the first set and make WAY more power in the future. You can't go ahead and use any other heads on the 305 because the small bore limits you to a 1.94 intake valve. I you really want heads, just pocket port the 305 heads and rebuild with a 3 angle valve job.
ToplessZ
Vortec heads have the 1.94 intake valves I believe so those would work right? I can get a new set for 400 bucks or less on ebay
Guest Anonymous
Vortec heads will fit a 305 and the valves will clear the cylinders, BUT Vortec heads have a different intake manifold bolt pattern.
Mike C
FYI, you can get Vortec heads for a 305 that have the smaller combustion chambers. I still stand by spending money on a motor you plan on replacing with yet another is throwing good money after bad. Just drive the 305 and spend the extra $ on your new motor. ToplessZ
Hey I know you guys are gonna hate me for this but im pretty stubborn. I want to accomplish something different with this engine. I have to study more on it as to how far I can go. But I think it would be really awesome to build a 305 to what most people get out of a 350. Im not to worried about spending money on this motor because I can always part it out. Im a big ebay freak. Anybody have any good ideas besides trying to talk me out of my insanity I was thinking maybe bore the block to take a standard 350 piston the vortec heads I can buy for cheaper than a performance rebuild and valve job or at least the same price. I dunno But Im open to any more weird ideas for a 305 Ive got a fairly flexible budget for parts although the cheaper the better. Only need about 325 hp. MORE IS BETTER THOUGH thanks for all the input so far
Guest Anonymous
Jared, A305 has a 55 cc chamber if I remember right and it uses a 1.88 intake valve. There has been a few right ups about buiding "high " horse power 305 , but you will get more power out of a 4" bore motor simple because of the incress in piston area . I would follow everyone else and say , save your money for the big motor and use this one to get the car laid out TM
Guest Night_rider_383
ToplessZ.... There's been alot of 300-400 hp 305's since they came out, but its gonna take double the money to make a small bore, small c.i.d engine to performer in that range. YOU CAN NOT BORE A 305 TO TAKE A 350 PISTON. The bore on a 305 is 3.750'' bore on a 350 is 4.000'' The max safe over bore on a 305 is .060''. So you see borin a 305 to the max will only give you a small 3.810'' bore. If you dont wanna spend 4 grand or so on the 305 to get it to the 400 hp range then you will be much better off startin your hot engine with a 350 core, you can get 400 hp easy out of a 355 cid and for far less than 4 grand, but if you just got to have a 305 build it .060'' over, dome pistons, 11.00:1 c/r, alum heads, 1.94'' intake valve, roller rockers, vic jr. intake, etc etc
Guest Anonymous
The 305 doesn't have a 3.75" bore, but only a 3.736" bore. Most 305s will develop overheating problems when bored .060". There are kits available that use the 400 crank and rods for 334ci. Bottom line, I agree with the others; wait and build a 350. All you need is a block, heads and pistons; you already have everything else.
David K
to my understanding you cant really bore a 305 all that much because the coolant passges run differently than the 350. i remember helping some friends when i was in a 3rd generation fbody club. they had 305 tbi motors and i had a 350tpi. my motor was completely different. also to my understanding, the 305 was also offered in a 305 H/O. I think i would take the 305 H/O over the 350. It was brought to my attention that the 305 has a shorter stroke and revs up much much quicker and also can be revved higher than the 350. If you work that 305, then you coulc have a monster motor. david karey socalz prez
