Head Question

Recommended Posts

I have been trying to "decode" numbers on my new project 350 engine since I bought it. Today I went looking for the head numbers and here is what I found.

333882= 74-78 350/400 76cc chambers

F28 74= June 28 1974

The engine is a 1974 block with the following numbers.

Casting# 3970014

Suffix code# T0705CMA (Tonawanda, 7-5-1974)

I plan on getting an edelbrock aluminum intake and carb, and keep the stock heads unless anyone sees a big problem with the ones I have. I would love to get Edelbrock aluminum heads to match the intake but money is kinda scarce.

What cam would you all reccomend with this set up? What carb and intake?

The car will be classified as a daily driver mostly going to shows but I do want some punch out of the engine.

Thanks.

Also I have contacted a local engine builder who says that he will charge about $975.00 to rebuild the 350. Does this price sound good?

most of an engine power potential is in the heads flow potential, cam timeing and compression ratio. theres an easy 50 plus hp loss in useing the stock heads over the hp level that could be obtained with better heads, its your choice but if you only get two good parts its heads then cam for your max return for money spent.

The Monte Carlo 350 engine is an all Edelbrock performer package cam, lifters, intake. carb. manifold. minus aluminum heads which makes it very civilized. You can tell it has a cam at idle and it is still accelerating that old heavy chevy body after my nerve runs out. A little more than stock but I figure that motor is going to push the Tomahawk faster than I can think or steer..$975. does not sounnd too high if it is quality parts and a good balance (really important),.... good valve job. See what his parts list is and then check out summitt catalog to see what they sell for re-build kits (from $225. to $450. with Keith Black pistons). I have a 4 barrell 350 in a van with a bad rear main seal which I plan to re-ring and do the bearings myself.

Thanks,

I thought of just stuffing the old engine in the Z without having it rebuilt but I, like most on this site can't do just that. Nooooo while it's out, I should take it and have it rebuilt, yeah that's the ticket!

I think that the stock heads will give me more than enough power for the little Z. Besides, I can always upgrade to the nice "pricy" aluminum heads while the engine is in the bay, and when I recoupe some cash. :D

Heck I could use that extra grand that would have been spent on heads elsewhere. Remember, I still need to refurbish the stock brakes, find a radiator, tires, wheels, interior parts, drive shaft and lets not forget the most important thing, a tranny. Unless I want to try and use the old Muncie ;) Uhhhhhhh No!

FWIW, I wouldn't even THINK about using those large chamber "smog" heads. Save the $300 it will cost to R&R them and at minimum get a set of World Products SR torquers if you already have an intake you plan to use. If you are going to buy an intake, get the Vortec conversion package or some Iron Eagle heads or SOMETHING. I know it will add to your budget, but will be MORE than worth it long term. Otherwise, I'd just put a $50 PAW cam and lifters in it and call it good with a new timing chain.

Flash, I have a pair of camel hump fuelie heads (460 I think)with small valves, not the 202's.They are 64cc and need to be rebuilt. No accessory holes. These are very good heads, if you want them I'll take $150 for them. Let me know.
