Guest Anonymous
Grumppy you said your friend got 498 out of the motor. Can we trust the info from the car mags and Dyno results from AFR?
silicone boy
Getting back to the original posting about the Car Craft 383 in the June issue, just how streetable is the cam they used? It's the Comp Cams 294 Magnum, mechanical lifter. I assume the answer is: not very. I have very similar components, including the AFR 195 heads, ready to go together, but I was planning on a milder hydraulic roller (any suggestions for a street car that will not be seeing any time on the dragstrip?). I will also be using Electromotive's TEC3 fuel injection rather than the Holley 750 they used, but everything else is the same. It's the first V8 I've put together (I've built several VW performance engines) and I have you guys to thank or curse for it. I knew very little when I started lurking on this board a couple of years ago, and because of all the brainpower here, you've all made me feel like I can get the job done. Thanks. Mikelly
I'm not sure of the build, but my 383 is expected to make about the same HP (Grumpy Confirmed this) and I had it together and in my car two years ago and drove it in Washington DC Rush hour traffic... VERY Streetable... But it will DRINK gas... I was getting about 13MPG... I'm hoping I can tame that aspent with FI... Mike
grumpyvette
bubafett you can trust the info in most advertisements and car mags about as far as you can trust the average guy not to look at cute girls wearing see though lace blouses : silicone boy "just how streetable is the cam they used? John Scott
Ah Grumpy, I wish we could keep the political jokes out of the forum. Comments on religion, politics, no matter how innocent the intentions, usually just raise hackles...anyway, streetable is in the eyes of the beholder. I'd look at the purpose of the car. If its your sole means of transportation, better tame it down. Plenty of 250 and up duration cams running around here. I'll be one of them. Looking for high milage, good commuter, stuck in gridlock? Not my Zs intentions. Running around on weekends, blast up the canyon, down to the drags, some compromises, but definitely streetable. grumpyvette
ok you might be correct about this is not the place for political humor,(its removed) and I drove a 700hp fuel injected 496 bbc 68 VETTE with 8 injector stacks sticking 10" out of the hood on the street for two years so Im not against hot rod engines and am well aware of the potential problems but if your looking for LONG TERM DEPENDABLITY, air conditioning, reasonable behavior in traffic jams on hot days ,ETC. keeping the cam durration and lift under 240 degs helps, as I said above,my definition of streetable is (can I drive this car the way it is, from new york to L.A. and back and reasonably expect to have no problems) anyone can drive almost any car for a few blocks or miles on the street but thats not a true test of STREETABLE
silicone boy
Grumpy, John, thanks for the suggestions. Yeah, you have to be reasonable about what the car is being used for. Just the other day, I was driving to work on my 3 mile commute in bumper to bumper traffic and I just happened to have my Z with me(which I rarely drive to work). A Viper pulls up next to me and blips his throttle. Even with my mildly warmed over 355, I thought, "I could stay with you". Then I realized we were both stuck in traffic! Some good all that horsepower did us. I agree with John, you have to be honest about what you really are going to use the car for. My racing VW GTI became a racer because I put on 450 lb/in coil over springs. No problem I thought. Now, I was 20 at the time (a long time ago) and didn't know any better. My brain was rattled to mush over the next year until I got another car.My definition of streetable just meant getting around town and all the other stuff John mentioned, so the ability to go LA to New York sounds great. Guest 1fastz
just a note but at 540 horse level adn the rpm that motor pulls the parts they used in that buildup wont live a very long happy life .. i would recomend at the least a forged steel crank and good rods at that level..
