The long and short of it... (waterpumps)

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to find out if there is any advantage

in the short vs long waterpump set-up. I have

a short aluminum pump that uses spacers to position

it at the long pump's location. Since I plan to

replace my pulleys (I'm the one that's been throwing

fan belts) I figured I could easily go either way.

I am using an electric cooling fan, so locating a mechanical

fan is not an issue. Thanks for your help.

I don't know of any addvantage per se, except most of the AL water pumps are available in short format only or short and long. It might be nice to not have an extra set of gaskets with the spacers to make the short pump work on a long setup.

The other thing you have to think about is the accessory mounting (alternator, etc.) you'd need different brackets with the short pump, and those may space the alternator or whatever too close to the hood, headers, etc.

Hey, if you have it set up for the long pump, I'd just keep it. I don't see any advantage, only more work to convert.

You must also consider what valve-train

components and valve covers that you are using. I tried to use the short pump and mount the alternator on the passenger side

just in front and above the valve cover.

Wouldnt work with the tall valve covers.

I had to use the spacers just like the ones that you are using...
