Thumper
Just wanted to say hi to everyone. Picked up my 83' 280zx n/a yesterday. It has 171k miles on it and runs perfectly This car has really been taken car of. Well my first question is my rear tail lights are the unibrow type w/ the 280zx logo in the middle. The license plate goes onto the bumper. My question is what 280zx came w/ this type of taillight? I've looked at all the pictures I could and haven't seen anyone with the same taillights as I have (I do not have a camera to take a pic of it). My second question is about the shifter. It seems to me the shifter is angled alittle bit forward. Almost looks like the car is in third when its in neutral. From the 280zx's i have seen in the past i don't think it is suppose to be this way. I've taken the shift boot off and looked at the shaft it does not look to be unnaturally bent. Has anybody experienced a problem like this? TIA Ted Schmidt
THUNDERZ
I'm not sure if this will help , but I put a zx trans in my z and with the z shifter rod it was way forward. I had to take it out , cut it and find a good place for it to sit. Then I tacked it and welded it. Maybe it is a z shifter not a zx. If it looks "bent" like it really shouldnt be in the shape it is. Go yank one out of a yard(bring yours with you) and see if its bent. If it is just buy the one from the yard. Jim
JMortensen
Welcome! The '82 parts car I had had separate tail light lenses. The '79 parts car I had years before that might have been unibrow, I can't quite remember. I seem to remember the ZX shifter I had used a big tan colored shifter bushing with a coil spring in it. The earlier Z style uses a small clear plastic shifter bushing. This might be a good distinguishing feature to see if you have the wrong shifter in the car. You could always bend the shifter in a hydraulic press to fix... Jon
Thumper
Well i've figured out the tail light question. It seems one of the previous owners bought a center tail light for the vehicle. I personally think this is hideous so i'm off to nissan tom hoping they have the little grey light cover in stock. If not i'm going to run to local junkyard and pick one up. Bad thing is though the car has had a paint job since it was put on so underneath the tail light cover it is not the correct color. On the shifter question I think i'll look at some junk yard cars or i might just bend this one. But pls give me so more ideas on the shifter. Thanks Ted Schmidt
THUNDERZ
there are after market "short shifters" through MSA, But I think cut and weld is more of a safe bet then bending in light of being able to tack and test position before paying and guessing with a hydraulic bend. No mig welder? no friend with one? Make your best choice. Jim
