260DET
One really good thing about this forum is the comments sometimes made which get the brain thinking. Someone said something about redrilling or slotting the three holes at the top of the body structure itself rather than mess around with adaptor plates or whatever. While my car has adjustable lower control arms for camber and same with the tension rods for castor, it seems like a good idea to relocate the top strut pivot points (insulators) as well for several reasons. On examining the location of the three insulator bolt holes, it seems possible to retain the inner hole location, the hole nearest the engine, and rotate the location of the other two holes towards the back about 20mm. This will both give a bit more castor and negative camber. I can't see any downside to this. Easy to do and the final camber/castor setup can be done using the existing adjustable components. Importantly, whatever extra castor gained means the wheels will have to go forward that little bit less to get 5 degrees, recommended by Johnc I think. JMortensen
That was me. I've seen it before, can't remember where. I have camber plates myself, so I've never actually done this. I want to say Dan Baldwin has slotted the holes... just not sure. The limiting factor would be the size of the strut top insulator. Its pretty big, so it would limit the movement when it hits the inside of the strut tower. Also, if you moved them back for more caster you might put some suspension bind into the control arms and TC rods. Maybe not, as the top insulator might flex enough... TomoHawk
My JRTR book has a similar idea. slotting the holes across the width of the car to change castor/camber.
Modern Motorsports Ltd
Fine idea and a concept I incorporated into my own car. My custom camber/caster 280ZX front plates were machined offcentre to build caster into them. (moved strut top/centrelyine towards firewall) Just machined for approximate max. at tower and still allow camber adjustment. Reduces amount I have to push forward my wheel for increased caster as you note. I've run as much as 10 degrees caster and am back around 5 degrees at present. I'm going to dial it up to about 6.5 sometime here when leisure time allows.
260DET
Good, I'm going to do it. You seem to think of everything Ross C.
