Guest jeff1216
I need to replace my clutch (78 280z) I ofcourse need to drop my drive shaft first...........At the rear differential there is absolutly no way in hell I can get a wrench or socket on any of the 4 nuts ......what is the secret???? My bleeding knuckles really want to know. The nuts are aiming toward the rear of the car and there is just no room to work.....It seems that they would be positioned forward to be able to get a wrench on the darn thing
David K
open end wrench the 4 14's on the driveshaft/diff flange. Use 2 wrenches, one to turn the bolt and one to hold the nut on the other side.
fl327
drop the rear sway bar or use a crowsfoot 14mm. only one wrench needed if original d bolts. buck up.
David K
why was i thinking zx when he specified z?
JMortensen
They must have changed the bolts between 240 and 280. Mine has 12mm bolts. I use a long 12mm wrench just in front of the crossmember, and a large screwdriver to keep the U-joints on the driveshaft from turning. When you get it loose, if you have a front mounted rear sway bar, you can pry the driveshaft past the swaybar (scratching the swaybar if you care about such things) and force it back in when reinstalling. I took my rear bar off probably 10 times before a friend showed me I didn't have to. Saves a lot of time to pry the driveshaft past it. I always seem to have to wrench the nuts all the way off to. It's a real PITA in my Z. Jon
Guest Zachb55
yeah i got a 240 and i have 4 12mm bolts that i easily got off by putting the car in gear then slowly loosening the one side with the nut, the bolt side stayed locked in for me... -Zach

Im the guy that pulled his rear sway bar off if i broke driveshaft bolts (common thing in my old v8z) i could replace em faster. The rear sway bar goes back in now, thanx for the tip. the head of the bolts always stay put pretty good when i do mine, requiring only one wrench. the stock Z bolts are pretty dang strong, you need to wrench em all the way off... The turbo zxt driveshaft bolts are the stuff if you can get them, allen headed and TOUGH...
