Ok, where to start?

I just bought a 74 260z with an 2.8L out of a 78(sellers information). He has put different carbs on it, but I have no idea what they are. It runs like crap now, so I need to tune it up. Problem is I have only a chevy background so all this is new to me. I couldn't locate on the carbs where to adjust the mixture. Its running WAY rich right now. You can smell gas driving 65. Plus it runs like crap. I know this engine has some decent potential. I've searched on tuning, but don't know what carbs these are.. help?

phyte...

you just bought a car and only posted one pic? bad phyte!!!!

kind of looks like he put back on the original 260 carbs, a cardinal sin that any z-owner should be shot for. if these are indeed the crappy emissions-optimized 74 carbs the first thing you need to do is use them for what they're worth.... and it's not for feeding an engine!!!! alot of people put early 240 carbs on and feel like they bought a new car. i had the same problems with my 74 carbs, bought a set of early su's, and subsequently changed my mind twice on the engine i was using. so.... i still have the carbs if this turns out to be the case and you're interested. i could use a little extra project money. hope that helps.... and congrats on the new car. at least a part of your life will never be the same........bob

Hmmmm... a Chevy man huh...drop a chevy V8 in that thing and that will solve your tune up problems. :D:D

Oh trust me' date=' and LT1 and 6 speed will be going in after the new year. I just want to get this engine running decent until then.

You want pics huh.. I got your pics :D It looks a little purple in the pics(crappy digital), but its slate.

Nice car Phyte !!

I' ll go with everyone else, put some early 240z carbs like those (with the round top): http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2440047179&category=33550

Check your head before !! But those carbs get rid of the anti-polution and are very easy to tune!! I did that and I am an happy guy :D and they look so clean.

Thanks! I got it at a really good price.

He gave me these carbs with the car. I would of figured this one is the original 260 carbs. He put in a L28 from a 78? What is this carb?

the first carbs are flat tops. those are regarded as potentially good paper-weights except for the fact that they leak fuel too much :D

the second set of carbs that you just posted pics of are round tops and are much better. I just rebuilt mine for $30 total and they run great!

Those second set you have are the first gen of carbs' date=' before 72 1/2. Use those. they are the one I'm talking about. No emissino stuff :D less proble. If you have 2, put them on now...Have fun :D

I got two! :D I'll be putting those on soon then after a rebuild. Where can a get a rebuild kit for them?? Thanks much guys.

Ztherapy sells the rebuild kits for way more than they are worth. You can get rebuild kits from Kragen auto parts (as well as probably a number of other auto parts stores) for about $15 each. (As opposed to Ztherapy's $50 or so each)
