Guest datsun280zmike
i have a 76 280z and i am putting a fuel cell in it...does anyone have a basic diagram of how to install the lines etc...also i was thinking about getting a summit cell with a vented cap??? what else would i also need besides steel braided lines and such thanks
Tim240z
A diagram? There are only three outlets. One for fuel supply to the engine, one for return fuel to the tank (if necessary), and the top one for vent. That's it. Tim
z-REX
now my question for tim... what's the best destination for the vent line? i'd be inclined to think that some form of container would be somewhat better than gas fumes releasing directly to the atmosphere. hope nobody smokes within ten feet of my car..... Tim240z
Just get an empty coffee can and fill with activated charcoal, then plumb the vent tube to the bottom of that. Tim
z-REX
thanks tim! i'm assuming that i could stash that anywhere out of the way. nice and simple....i haven't had nearly enough of that in this project!
Guest datsun280zmike
thanks tim ....now which cell would you reccommend? the plastic type ones or an aluminum? or does it even matter? haha
BillZ260
my cell only has 2 outlets, one vent, one pickup to the fuel pump. I am using the Holley Red as you suggested so i guess I won't need a return line eh?
Tim240z
You won't need a return line, unless you plan on using a fuel pressure regulator that requires a return. So......plug one of the outlets, or use both into a 'Y' block. Up to you. Tim
Tim240z
thanks tim ....now which cell would you reccommend? the plastic type ones or an aluminum? or does it even matter? haha Doesn't really matter. Some people don't like the plastic ones because they have gotten a bad reputation for deforming, but that is due to lack of adequate venting. I have a plastic Jazz cell and it has a #8 line vented to atmosphere and has deformed badly over the years. 16 gallon cell now only holds 12 gallons. Spend the extra cash and get the aluminum cell. Just my experience and opnion
Tim240z
Hmmm...Mark, maybe bad luck or bad cell? I have known many, many racers (including my father) who have used the same cell (in very harsh, ie hot climates) for decades with no problems. Aluminum cells are great, but good ones are a bit more expensive than the plastic ones and have a tendency to crack if not mounted in such a way to reduce vibration transference from the vehicle. One point is that the aluminum ones are easier to repair. Tim
Guest Anonymous
Tim, I think what has happened is that the mount that came with the cell was a tight fit and squeezes the cell. Over the years the heat together with the pressure from the mount has deformed the cell. Not a big deal but I wish I had used the aluminum one to begin with. Oh well always next time.
