Guest Boyd
Just went out this afternoon to work on the Z a bit, try and figure out an electrical problem I have been having. Well, thought I would start it and move it closer to the shop. The engine would spin over and lock, spin over and lock, so I was scared something must have happened fairly serious internally. So, to be sure it wasn't flooded, I pulled out the spark plugs. When I pulled #4, a cylinder full of gas ran out!!! Apparently, I have an injector that is sticking open for some reason. I just changed out the injector plug wires, but it was determined that polarity doesn't matter. LOL...while I had the plugs out, I thought I would spin the engine over 1 rev with the start to flush some more gas out. BAD, BAD idea. The engine spewed gas like a geiser!!! So, I wiped up some gas and have let it be for now. So...has anyone ever heard of an injector sticking open? Any suggestions on checking it? fl327
first make sure ignition is in good shape. make sure plug wire is secure at both ends. fire it up. still wet-change the injector.
David K
check your timing and make sure its not over advanced. Ive had timing issues where i over advanced, and the engine would actually ignite while on the upstroke, causing it to kinda stick on cranking like you mentioned. Improper timing could also be your fuel flooding problem.
JMortensen
Sounds to me like an injector stuck open (yes I've heard of this before)and it hydro-locked. Can you put a mechanic's stethoscope on it and turn the key on? Should be able to hear it spraying. Or just turn the key on and leave the spark plug out and see if fuel comes out of the spark plug hole (assuming you have that cyl at TDC). I know some shops have fuel injector cleaner machines where they actually plug the injector into the machine, but I've never actually seen one. If you could find a shop that does that they can probably get it working again. Or you could just replace that injector. EDIT--You should change your oil when you get it fixed too. Who knows how long that's been going on. Jon
Guest Boyd
Thanks for the info guys. Forgot to mention this is a fresh build (P90 head, P90 pistons, and new rings). I also run Megasquirt and I am not totally convinced it is not the culprit in some fashion. But I do believe it is most likely an injector stuck open. I will try the idea of leaving the plug out and turning key on to see if injector is stuck open.
