will an r180 handle a 350 chevy?

it can, but not for long. how much torque/power are you planning on putting through the stock rear diff? And is this for daily driven, or for track - because once you add in slicks, that rear diff will grenade because you now add massive traction into the equation.

 

just an fyi, there are R200 3.36 geared rear differentials - they're somewhat rare, but they can be attained. The 3.54 geared ones are pretty good for that combo, though.

My take on things is that the R180 will do just fine, IF it's in good shape to begin with, and IF you use an automatic transmission and IF you don't abuse it.

 

That said, if you were in the mood to drive like grandma Moses all the time, why would you bother plopping in a hairy V8 in the first place?

 

Drive it as long as it lasts, and if/when it blows apart, swap it out for an R200. That's what I'm planning on doing.

maybe i will try a 3.54 r200 ..i just figured it would be too low with the th350...the 180 will stay in there till in craps out though..i dont plan on driving like a grandma at all..quite the opposite..lol..but it will never see slicks..i might run it down the 1/4 now and then...smoke a few people who mess with me on the street..but it will more than likley see alot more duty as my street driver...everything is just on hold till the doc releases me to work again..(bum back)...take care..and thanks for the replys..jim

Careful about running the old 1/4 mile on a r180. Mine imploded or should I say shredded my r180 on my first attempt at the 1/4 :mad:

 

200 bucks is not a cheap tow home from Ennis Tx. to plano Tx. :mad:

I had an R200 in my car with a 350 and a turbo 400. At 3000 RPM I was doing 60 MPH. I put an R200 3.36 in a month or so ago and it seems better but I havenet checked my speed at 3000 RPM yet. I kind of like the kick in the pants that you get with a low speed rear end. Probably poor gas milage but who cares I didn't buy the car for the gas milage.

Great thing about gear ratios without chaning tire is it is simple math. 3.70 are 10% more gear than 3.36 (1o% more rpm) while 3.54 are only 5% more, thus a 5% increase in rpm. And for Balford's car, that's 2850 instead of 3000, which can be significant depending on the cam in your car.

ok..i was thinking..an r180 has 3:36 rear gear ratio..so if i used a 350 chevy engine and a 350 turbo trans with this rear gear it would be perfect...if i used a r200 with a 3:54 it would be a little low..i know i know i should use a 700r4 or a t-5 but i can get a rebuilt th350 with a b&m shift kit already in it for almost nothing...ive heard of the r180 being able to handle the 350 chevy..is it true?..im not all that abusive to the car so i think it might hang in there for a while.whatta ya think?

well in that case i need a 3.03 gear rear end cause with my tranny(close-ratio 4speed saginaw) im doin 3500+ at about 70mph...either that or get a t-56...i think i would be better off with t-56 though cause with 400+ lb/ft torque i think the halfshafts and CV's would go out fairly quick...what yall think?
