Flywheel resurface question

Well I'm installing a new 6 puck clutch and want to make sure that there is no reason for it to slip so I figured I should resurface the flywheel. I heard that there is a "glazing" effect that happens to the surface of the flywheel that prevents the clutch from grabbing at full force. My Flywheel doesn't have and grooves or anything. The problem is that I dont have an impact wrench and that makes it really difficult to get off.

Can I just go over the surface lightly with fine grit sandpaper or something like that? How neccesary is getting the thing resurfaced?

There is a step on the flywheel. The step means that the clutch mating surface is slightly different from the pressure plate surface. I'm not sure what the spec is supposed to be, but as long as yours is within spec you could reuse it. I would use a die grinder with a sanding disc to put a light crosshatch pattern on the mating surface to break the glaze if there is any.

Garrett,

I can tell you from first hand experience that you should get the flywheel resurfaced. Beg, borrow, or rent a wrench to take it off. The clutch and flywheel mate and they ware together as a set. You may not see the wear pattern or grooves but the flywheel has runout from all the heat and usage over the years. Very similar to ones brakes and how they mate and break in together. What will happen if you don't resurface the flywheel is the first few hundred miles with the new clutch will seem fine then all of a sudden you will start to get clutch chatter as you let up on the pedal. You basically ruined the clutch and have to do the whole thing over.

Like I said it happened to me so learn from my mistake!
