blueovalz
Well, I finally got fed up with the poly cell I had (only 12 gallons and it changed its shape depending on how much fuel was in it) and had a local sheet metal shop fabricate aluminum one. This new cell is 17 gallons, and has a rigid top. With the panels I've fabricated to go flush with the top of the cell, the entire rear tray of the car is complete. Yes, the fuel pump and filter are on a panel between the towers. I had to removed it from under the car where the exhaust was overheating the pump (causing it to shut off at red lights and slow traffic). A cover will be made for it later. johnc
You'll need to completely seal off that area from the passenger compartment and also seal the battery from the fuel area. Vent holes in some of the horizontal AL panels in the picture will also be needed to allow any built up vapors to dissapate. Just some tips from a SCCA tech inspector... Drax240z
Lookin' good Terry... Just wondering, how loud is that pump? Seems like it's on a drum aimed right at you! Or do you have other sounds to drown it out?
JMortensen
You'll need to completely seal off that area from the passenger compartment and also seal the battery from the fuel area. Vent holes in some of the horizontal AL panels in the picture will also be needed to allow any built up vapors to dissapate. You could sink the battery down below the deck, which would be preferable for weight anyway, and just build a cover that closes off the vent lines and the fuel filler from the rest of the cabin. I'm really not into having the battery exposed in the back. There was a thread about that a while ago. Hydrogen is poisonous and extremely explosive. Nice fab work, as usual! z-ya
While on the subject of tech inspection, would an aluminum cover over the filler and all hoses be acceptable? Does the battery need to be an air tight seal? Here is the fuel cell on autocross/time trial car a couple of friends of mine are building. See the pic (the battery is now enclosed in an aluminum box):
