Guest Jim226
Hey everyone i'm a newbie here but have a question thats bugging me. I recently just got a set of the tokico blues with matching springs from shox.com for my 74 260z(10/74), But here is the problem when i was taking out the front struts i noticed something....their are two different strut cart. one is wider in diameter and more "beffer" and the other one is smaller in diameter, also the brake line braket on the smaller one is different from the beffer one (ie:horizontel, vertical?). could the previous owner have put a 240 cart. in by mistake ??? which one is the correct one for my car? and where can i get it ? j260z
are you talking about the shock cartridge or the strut assembly that the cartridge goes into? if you are talking about the strut assembly then you should have the smaller version in your car. the early 260's came with the same assembly as the 240's and the late 260's came with the larger diameter 280 assemblies. i suspect that the previous owner may have replaced one with the newer style without seeing the difference as the complete strut assembly is interchangeable. if this is the case, you should check to see if the isolators are the same or not. they are the part with the three bolts that attach to the shock towers on the car. the 240 version is about 3/4" shorter than the 280 one. in any case, i would get another 240 strut assembly to replace the 280 one just for consistency ie. replacing shock cartridges or converting to coilovers. Mike Mileski
Is an October 1974 260Z still considered an early version? October seems pretty late in the year to still be considered early, but then I never was sure what the exact time was they started making the big bumper cars. j260z
my mistake, the early 260 was from 8/73 to 8/74. so your car would be considered a 75 260. you have the big bumpers then.. right? if that is the case then you would need to swap out the smaller 240 strut housing. Guest Jim226
Hey everyone thanks for the help, But ya my car has the big "crash bumpers".....so what your saying is get rid of the 240z cart. and get the larger diameter one?? My other question is this; the tokico blue shock kinda has some room in the 260z cartridge and is very snug in the 240z cart. ??? what is this about ? should it have some room ?? j260z
i have the early 260 so i'm not totally sure of the fit for the larger struts but i believe the cartridge will have some side to side play in the larger tubes but this will disappear when the gland nut is tightened down. i think the gap is there to keep the cartridge from rusting into place which is a problem with the earlier design. Mike Mileski
The tube diameter is slightly larger on the later (280Z) strut housings. The "gap" is there so you can fill it up about 2/3s full with oil, which is a medium for conducting heat away from the strut cartridge. I'm not real sure where you buy the oil that goes in there but its not just motor oil, I know that much. Mike Mileski Tucson, AZ

Georgia Flash
I just got my package of Tokico springs (nice red ones ) and struts from MSA. The instructions in the Tokico Strut package says that any type of oil can be used to fill the strut housing as long as it is light. I guess by light they mean like gear oil such as Tim suggested.
