found potential source for full length sbc headers

Recommended Posts

i was just poking around on ebay for 81 corvette rear diffs cuz i saw one at a swap meet with 410 gears in it for 150 bucks felt way tight. anyways in my search i came up with these http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2472077163&category=33631 and i was thinking they might work! might require moving the steering shaft. not sure though

Check out these headers from sanderson headers (SandersonHeaders.com)

Angled plug head

Straight plug head

They are just like block hugger headers then turn into full length headers. This design is made for old street rods with big engines in small compartments.

I installed a set in a 1934 chevy with a small block. I'm pretty sure they would also fit in a V8 datsun since they have the block hugger design. And I know block huggers fit easily.

I think the side view picture is used as general decription and it doesn't really show the shape of the header. The header did fit very close to the block (just like a block hugger) then it continued to a full length. Now I wish I tried them on my car before installing them on the 34'. Maybe a call to sanderson will clear that up.

Prior to my 34 experience, I bought a full length Hooker header made for V8 conversions in Z cars. But that header didn't fit very well because the header wasn't designed for the "set back" position or shatter shields. I had to do some cutting and bending to get it to work. I did try those corvette headers first and they didn't even come close (as mentioned above). In the end, I wish I had just made a custom header because it took a lot of tweeking on the Hooker header to get it to fit.

the hooker full length header will only work with the scarab/hooker kit that, as pyro mentioned, is not the setback plate kit like jtr. tim240z is using s&s headers which he modified to work with his car, but they will work out of the box with jtr or hooker/scarab (but fit better with jtr). from ssheaders.com:

5205 SB 1-3/4

Chevy Headers SB 1-3/4' Long Hugger 1927-34/ 1935-48 Fat Fenders with Rack & Pinion /1962-67 Nova with Rack & Pinion Steering/Straight or Angle Plugs/240/260 Z Datsun with Small Block Chevy -Raw

as mike mentioned, they do hang pretty low. Mikelly mentioned 3" of clearance with his car recently with the s&s headers. different suspension setups may yield different results in clearance. here's what the driver's side s&s header looks like out of the box:

and on an engine you can see how close the headers hug the block:

the oil pan is a milodon 5 qt pan (stock replacement is how it's advertised). my headers are back in the box at the moment (the headers in the pic are the same, but from my friend's race car), but iirc, the driver's side was about 1/2 to 3/4" lower than the pan, while the passenger side was 1.5 to 2" lower than the pan. the measurements are in reference to the primaries, not the collectors. also, these headers are close enough to the block on the driver's side to require using a 1/2 quart oil filter.

Thanks Ryan. I've got a set of the S&S's lying in the shop, but haven't got to test fit them yet cause my motor's scattered around the shop too. It sounds like they might be pretty low at my ride height. I was hoping to upgrade from the block huggers.

..........sigh...........

Maybe I need to start thinking about getting back on the track in 05 instead of 04.

Guys, Sorry I haven't commented on these discussions... I can read at work, but not post... CIA's Software for ya! :D

I don't know how "LOW" low is for some... However, I've got a set of ground control coil overs, 10 inch rear springs, 9 inch front springs, 17inch wheels with low profile 40 series tires all around and my car sits with about 6 threads showing from the perch stops. With that setup, I've got 3 inches ground clearance from the ground... I'm not so sure this is to low... I also know that my oil pan hangs level with the collector on the headers.

I'm gonna use them and see what happens... They hang lower than the frame rail. Again, Not sure what others will be using on their cars, but I'm gonna try them... I don't think there is much more than an inch hanging lower. Once I get the car on the lift, I'll take more pics and try to get them posted.

If someone can get some good measurements we can check with Thorley headers. I checked with them about some headers for an unusual swap in my truck and a nice fellow there actually went through a portion of the inventory to help me find headers that were a close match. If all else fails, we could probably talk them into making some for us if we could arrange a batch buy.
