Shipped tires vs. 'store bought'?

looking at some ads for tires in magazines lately, from places like tirerack.com or whatever, and saw that there were some good tires for really cheap, comparable to how much I spend on my cheap all seasoners that I have on my car now. I know places like just tires do not sell these good tires for this cheap (talking $50-60 per tire). But, you dont pay shipping at just tires. Just wondering, is it cheaper to order tires, pay the shipping and such, than to get those same tires at a local tire store?

I'd still have to go to a tire place to install them :( I'm gonna do some more looking around. I just want to move up to a nice street tire that still wears reasonably long, nothing too pricey (hoping to get away with a full set installed for less than $300... is that feasible?)

Any store in particular you guys recommend? I was cross checking some tirerack.com prices to Just Tires prices and they weren't much cheaper... some of their stuff was actually more expensive for similar or same tires.

ah very cool :)

Well I was thinking ahead... still a little ways off from actually buying a set (as I am always a ways off from doing ANY of the things I need done on this car!!), but I know these tires have a lot of miles on them and I will need to change them soon. Thanks for letting me know.

btw Tim, nothing good has come up at work really. There is an old '80-something mazda compact sedan, but it looks like it most likely has a blown head gasket when I started it up. Otherwise it looks in good shape. Only other things that are getting close to clearing are an old crappy looking buick regal, and a very beat up isuzu mini-jeep looking thing... I forget what it was called. Nothing I'd consider worth a look but just letting you know. Sucks for me as I'm still looking out for a good beater/daily driver for myself as well... that nice little sentra got picked up two days before clearing :(

I've agonized over this a half dozen times. Direct ship tire pricing plus mounting costs & balancing locally vs buying at higher price from local dealer. Every time I have gone with the local Discount Tire dealer. Here's why:

1) I can also get a road hazard warranty which is really handy when the car is a daily driver.

2) They wil rotate and balance the tires for free every 5,000 miles

3) They will fix flats for free.

4) I establish a relationship with a local that will go "beyond the contract" to keep my business.

5) If you talk with them a bit they will generally come down to an "equivalent" price which adds even more value to 1-4.

I ordered tires from discounttiredirect.com for my mother and my brother in law.

Great service, no hard selling, and arrived in two days. Price was great, shipping was free.

12% of the cost of the tire gets you a lifetime of the tire warranty from them. Good thing too my brother in law, ggot a chunk of steel in the tire he just had put on one week later.

One phone call and 2 days later his new tire arrived, no questions asked. Gotta love that.

I remember when I first bought from them, 215 60 14's, cheapest price here with same or simalar tire, with same warranty was 347.00 for all four with tax.

From discout tire, 205 at the door. hmm 147 for balancing and installation. Oh wait it must be those new valve stems ;)

Buy offline, its a good choice.
