Guest shoemaker_
the title was just an attention getter. sorry... i have a 72 datsun with those good ole' SU carberators. noticed that the oil resevoir on top was empty on both of them the other day, so i filled them up with some tranny fluid (which i read on zcar.com works just as well). so after i filled them up i figured hay, job well done, but when i started it and drove on my way, my car was blowing smoke all the way back from kragens. So i think the oil resevoirs are leaking. so here's my questions. 1: what needs to be replaced (probably a gasket no?) what is it specifically called, and is there a place on the net i can just order it? 2: do i need to take the carb's out, or can i fix this while they are still on the engine? (i hope i don't have to take em' out). 3: my carbs have always ran rich. even after ajusting them several times my plugs still get fouled up. I have a stock L28, close-range 5spd, 3.54, and pretty much stock everything else, what size of needles do you *think i need (i have no clue what's in there now). I figured on just buying a couple different set's and trying them out (if their not to expensive). thanks to anybody who donates their time and thoughts. can't say i have much to offer except my own 2cents in the future, need it be. 8)
akeizm
I'm now quite disappointed with the lack of large brests But I might be able to help. Are you sure you havn't overfilled your dash pots? That can cause your car to be smokey. In answer to question 2, no you don't have to take your carbies off. and to question 3, the needles in the carbies atm (if they are 240z carbs) should be fine to use. I've got stock needles running in my 260z and its a modified engine.
JMortensen
I too am saddened by the udder lack of hooterificness on this post. I would think that akeizm is right, you overfilled the oil. The cap thing with the little stick has a dipstick on it. There is a line at the top for full and a line at the bottom for low level. I'd suggest you pull the bells off and clean up the oil from on top of the pistons. You should pull them off periodically just to clean the bells and the pistons so that everything stays clean and the pistons move up and down easily. ALWAYS be careful with the pistons so that you don't bend the needle. Don't set them down on the needle, and definitely don't drop them. I used ATF and then switched to Marvel mystery oil, both worked well for me. A friend of mine uses 20-50 in hers. When she tried a lighter oil her Z sputtered really bad. The pistons just went up too fast in hers, I think its a wear issue between the pistons and the bells on her car. As to the spark plug problem: Are you burning oil? You might want to try the next hotter plug if so. Good luck, Jon
